I’m an ex-Republican. I forced myself to vote for Hilary because it was clear to me that Trump 1) wasn’t a conservative, 2) would make the country worse off. #1 has proved correct, unless you redefine the meaning of conservative. #2 was an underestimation by orders of magnitude. I’ll gladly vote for Biden. Even if by some miracle Trump is not the nominee, I’ll vote Biden.

@bootsneak The Democratic Party has (or had) a tradition of being a big tent, a coalition of liberals, conservatives, and progressives. I understand what you meant about “the left” becoming more moderate, but I’m not sure if that’s the right way to put it or think about it.

@iamalongusername intelligence! 😛 But to be serious for a moment, let us take one of the main tensions of society: the rights and prerogatives of the group vs those of the individual. The group (or collective or whatever you wish to call it) is composed of individuals who give up absolute liberty for the benefits of being in the group. The tension is between the collective well-being and individual well-being. To simplify, imagine this relation between the group and the individual as being a line. The center is a balancing point (although it’s not a static point, it will always be shifting according to conditions), but on one side of point is the needs of society and the other is the needs of the individual. I’m on the side of the center point that favors the individual, but I recognize that there must be a balance. The needs of society must be given their due. Absolutist notions of liberty are the childish dreams of libertarians, power-crazed billionaires, and criminal warlords.
