  1.  @katekattigerfeet8088  I actually sympathize with her—I think that’s where a lot of my cringe comes from. I can understand fantasizing, pretending, even wishing you were something you are not. Maybe you can too? I think Hilaria should embrace what she really is, without making excuses for her fantasy. She is a Guanabí.

  2.  @brandonleemartinez5297  Interesting comment! I’m a mixed Asian/Caucasian Los Angeleno. English is my first language, but I began hearing and learning Spanish from an early age (although it wasn’t until many years that I attained anything like fluency). And yes, from my youth I spoke “Spanglish”, but that’s not what we’re talking about here. What I did want to mention is that my accent is very fluid. My actual accent in Spanish is bad: no native speaker would mistake me for a native speaker. But here is the funny part: my English accent picks up Spanish inflections and intonations! This depends on with whom I have been spending time and with whom I’ve been speaking; it’s most noticeable when I’ve returned to the U.S. after a long period in Mexico. A little joke that you, a linguist might enjoy. Unhappy that I was neither a full gringo nor chino, nor could I be a pocho or paisano, I asked a Boricua friend from Nueva Yorque what she thought I was. “Oh, that’s easy,” me contestó, “You’re a Guanabí.” So may I suggest that Hilaria is the same, a Guanabí, and there is no shame in it.

  4. Spain was also conquered by North African Muslims for centuries during the Middle Ages, so the question of whiteness in Spain is a door we can open. What does your whiteness mean if your white ancestors were intermixing with your non-white North African ancestors, and you are the final product?
