  1.  @leonlowenstadter9223  Agreed. Although we must grant that politicians can set trade policies that incentivize different forms of economic activity. But the truth is that there wasn’t a general tariff before Reagan that he removed. Under previous presidents, CONGRESS (not the president) enacted targeted tariffs and the Reagan administration and CONGRESS kept some and removed some. So the original claim is deeply flawed and not supported by historical facts. More generally, there is another issue as well: that trade policies and economic policies, once implemented, must be adhered to long term. We suffer from ideological inflexibility that prevents us from making tweaks or shifting our approach to meet current conditions. “Supply Side Economics” might have been be appropriate during the 80s, but didn’t address the economic conditions of the 90s. It’s like heating your house in the winter.

  2.  @HomeFromFarAway  You are correct to a degree, but socialism is literally the incorporation of multiple corporations into the government, which then operates as a single all powerful corporation. If capitalism is bad because of the tendency of corporations to grab power, socialism is worse.
