Not only did they forget that they were immigrants, some claim their supremacy as conquerors. Most of their ancestors came as immigrants, plopped down wherever they would benefit most from the previous conquests, and now their great-great-grandchildren take credit while denying any responsibility.

There’s really too many enthralled Republican voters, not to mention the opportunistic or cowardly politicians that enable Trump for their own craven purposes. The GOP’s time as a party representing decent people has passed, and the sooner decent people realize this and leave it, the better for them and the better for America. It can be hard to let go, and there are a few bravely trying to take back their party, but I fear it’s past saving. Let’s say they’re successful for the sake of argument. What have you got? How do you pull people back from their support of white supremacy/nationalism when the bright line has been crossed? Let’s say you manage to get the racists and those comfortable with supporting racists to leave the GOP. What then? The GOP will be a rump party, with a fraction of its power nationally. I think it’s far better for conservatives to register without any party affiliation, or, if their region would support it, back “moderate conservative” Democrat candidates. It might be the only way to wrest control of government (including state and local) from the fascists. Perhaps at some point it will be possible for conservatives to form a new political party, but this is no easy thing to organize. Again, you’re looking at doing it on the regional, state, and local levels.

@Johnston212 It’s true, and it goes back decades. The virulent strain of racism has been present since the 1960s “Southern Strategy”. The take-no-prisoners, War on Democrats goes back to Newt Gingrich in the 90s. These two tendencies won out over decency, equality, and freedom, and eventually democracy itself, preparing the way for the Cult of Trump.

It’s not going to happen. The cofounders of the Lincoln Project have said as much. Almost all have renounced the GOP and registered as independent; I think it’s down to one stubborn soul who remains a Republican (Michael Steele), who refuses to let the fascists redefine the Republican Party—a quixotic endeavor, but I have to respect him. As far as a multiple party system, I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it’s much easier to say it than to do it. Who will organize these parties? Around whom will these parties rally? Personally, the solution I will follow is to support Democratic candidates against Republican ones until the GOP is a smoking pile of rubble. I plan to stay registered independent, but that is subject to change if a conservative faction of the Democratic Party reconstitutes itself. If you believe all Democrats are liberals and all liberals are evil, you’ve been lied to. If you equate social safety nets with socialism, you’re ignorant. If you don’t believe conservatives, liberals, and progressives can’t find common ground to forge solutions to the problems we face, you’re trapped in an ideology, not faithful to your principles.

If they’ve lazily embraced their victimhood—which often boils down to clinging to unearned privilege—and have ignorantly embraced racism, let them go underground. It’s their own personal responsibility to stand up as decent people, admit their shortcomings, and work with their fellow Americans. If they insist on infantile words and acts, or worse, we don’t need them nor want them. They’ve had their way for far too long, under the guise of conservatism. And now, over the past 4 years, they’ve proven themselves to have neither fiscally conservative nor family values nor to be pro-life. What passes for a conservative movement in this country values power and a conservatism of convenience when it can be an instrument of power.

Unfortunately that doesn’t work with movements. While I appreciate the analogy, the /GOP/Trump Cult/whatever you want to call it/ is not a literal snake.

@bubba842 Do you see any indication of that happening on any broad front? There are a very few stalwarts, but most principled conservatives have seen the writing on the wall and resigned from the Party. Many were pushed out when Bush was president, and many have been feeling increasingly uneasy with where the GOP was heading prior to Trump. The only hope that principled conservatism can have a positive influence going forward is if more people wake up, understand the source of their unease, and leave the GOP.

Can you name the year that the Roman Empire fell? Can you describe the resemblances beyond the most superficial of comparisons? There’s a reason historians roll their eyes at such facile comparisons.

When you’re trying to save a house or a country, you might want to be judicious with fighting fire with fire. You might also want to take care with too directly imitating your adversary, lest you become what you are fighting. Which is not to say taking an easier, softer way is the solution. That’s what got us here in the first place.

I think you don’t understand CIA capabilities and limitations. I realize we have a tendency to make this secretive organization a bigger bogeyman than it actually is, but it’s not all that. It does well when it stays within its narrow areas of competence, but when it tries to go extra, beyond that competence, it runs into problems, both failure and unintended consequences.

You seem to be unaware that most of the Republican Establishment is still falling into line with Trump. Those that have been cognizant or are just now waking up are still a minority.
