  8. There’s something that happens when you promote based on loyalty and only surround yourself with loyal people. You lose the competent people that will tell you the truth, the people that could have confirmed that anything he saw on western media was true. Putin was lied to. But what is worse, he wanted to be lied to, to have his insecurities and anxieties soothed and smoothed over. That is the other half of the story. He demanded that his inner circle tell him only good news and flattering lies.
