  1. They didn’t try to pass it, they did pass it. The amount of the direct stimulus was negotiated. Senate leadership wanted $0. House of Representatives wanted $1200. What’s halfway between $0 and $1200? I’ll tell you what. I’d much rather have $600 in the bank than $0 in the bank and $2000 of should’ves. Now it’s up to the GOP to either make good on Trump’s demand or fail the country at a crucial time. Apparently, Trump has decided to punish his fellow Republicans in the Senate for not staying with him in the fight to stay in the White House. Or perhaps some other reason.

  3. Is it pork? Yes. Should we hold up emergency relief for 300 million Americans because the $900 billion price tag contains $89 million in pork? The money you’re concerned about is 0.01% of the total budget. If you include other porkish spending, it still adds up to less than 1%.

  6.  @catcowboy6376  You had to be an American citizen. If you filed jointly with a non-citizen as your spouse, you didn’t qualify for the first payment, but you will qualify for this one. If you were an 18+ dependent, you didn’t qualify and you still don’t.

On the macro scale, if people are spending that $600, especially if they spend it locally, it could keep the economy on life support just a little longer. Regarding your other point about whether Donald Trump can or can’t write legislation, over course he can’t, but normal presidents do it all the time. They write up legislative proposals, usually in conjunction with one or both chambers, and then the two chambers hash out the details, negotiate compromises, or refuse to participate, depending. The months of negotiations between Pelosi and Mnuchin (Mnuchin serving as Trump’s lead negotiator) were done with the good faith understanding that McConnell would back whatever Trump wanted (or McConnell could have also participated in the negotiations). It was surprising that McConnell torpedoed the negotiations when they were getting very close. But the main point here is that was an example of President Trump co-writing a bill. I’ll give you another example. President George W Bush asked for authorization to invade Iraq. He wanted specific powers and he got them. That is the executive branch writing a bill and asking Congress to enact it.

  8. I’m going to assume you’re not American, because you’re ignorant about how the American system of government works. One person and one person alone signs bills that have been passed by Congress. That is the President. Congress votes on legislation, and when legislation gets passed in both chambers of Congress, it’s delivered to the President for signing or a veto. If he vetoes it, Congress can override the veto with a supermajority. I’m not sure how any of this fits into any legal definition of treason.
