Plug for Suchomimus right here. He does short and to the point Ukraine War videos, often with geolocations. He’s very straight to the point and there’s not a lot of fluff. AND he’s taken an interest in bridges. He’s posted quite a few videos of the attacks on the Dnipro bridges that serve the Kherson area, not to mention the Ingulets River, that bisects the Russian controlled right bank. Edit: also worth pointing out that Russia did send at least one train pulling a short string of cars across the bridge on the second set of tracks. Probably a one time thing for propaganda effect. Maybe a test.

Peter Zeihan is very good, especially for tying the economics into the larger issues. There are others that are very good in other aspects of geopolitics and regional politics. What I like about Peter is that he’s a “generalist/specialist”. He knows how to synthesize and analyze large sets of data, and then distill it for a lay audience. He has an impressive breadth of general knowledge, some specialized areas, and he knows how to drill down in more detail.

@ChipmunkRapidsMadMan1869 Do you follow the shoe sect or the gourd sect?

Lol, it looks like an album cover from the 60s or 70s. 😂

A lot of armchair generals have learned to say the word logistics, but few know what it means. It’s just a word they invoke to sidestep their ignorance.

@igordragicevic8835 religion is your coping mechanism, but opiates will last you longer.

@BW022 If it was diesel fuel that burned as opposed to other liquid fuels, would that affect your diagnosis?

@DRNewcomb And short trains. The one video I saw of a train passing the damaged part was ten cars long, and I don’t imagine they were fully laden. I will be surprised if we see 40-100 fully laden boxcars or tanker cars crossing any time soon. Flatcars for the trailers don’t really make sense, though. The cargo is coming in by train and gets loaded onto the trucks to cross on the ferries. If the rail is functioning, you’re adding an extra step.

@davismichaelwayne7646 Even if the second pair of rails is functional up to a point, the Russians might not know what that point of failure is for sure. There are a few different ways (off the top of my head) of thinking about points of failure. One point of failure would be the weight passing over the damaged part of the bridge (even if most of the damage was to the other set of tracks). Another point of failure would be along the lines of “how many rail cars can you move across the bridge before failure”. I don’t think rail replacement is as big a deal as Peter thinks, but it’s not the rails that are the big problem. It’s the track bed and whatever supports the track bed that are the problem. If they’re OK, the repairs will go quickly.

He’s done longer public presentations. The videos are online if you search for them. The two that I have seen were slanted to a petroleum industry audience. The slant doesn’t make them wrong or biased, it means they’re coming from a certain viewpoint and addressing people with a certain viewpoint. I’m not going to slobber over Zeihan because he’s soooo insightful. He’s giving an educated, expert opinion based on his understanding of the facts. He could be wrong sometimes. The likeliness of his being wrong goes up when he starts getting out of his lane. But I like that he mostly keeps his bias out of his analysis and is straightforward. It’s ok if he’s wrong sometimes if he is an honest broker.
