I moved to Mexico 13 years ago, so I go back to the U.S. for vacation. đ

Itâs complicated. But the history of industry and labor in the U.S. has always been complicated. The âretractionâ in globalism wonât result in the end of globalism. Heck, it might merely slow it down. I expect that there will be more protectionism in our trade policies going forward. Perhaps itâs more accurate to say a tightening of policy, as opposed to the loosening (but not disappearance) of trade policy. This means tariffs, tax breaks, subsidies and the like to help our manufacturing become competitive with imports. (And I think the argument between the left and the right will be, or should be, how much protectionism. Not whether or not there should be protectionism.) Anyway, I like our chances if we can weather this flirtation with authoritarianism and culture warâand I am hopeful we will, although thereâs going to be a hell of a political hangover.

It depends on trade policies going forward, and the trend is towards more protectionism and towards regional arrangements. Globalism wonât end, but itâs poised to retract. When Pete talks about all these blue collar jobs, we have to keep in mind automation. The coming blue collar boom is not going to be like the WWII and post WWII boom. It will be a fraction of that. Some is going to get farmed out to Mexico, following the model set by the automotive industry under NAFTA. What do I mean about trade policies? Mostly tariffs, but there are other protectionist tweaks that can keep domestic production competitive with imports. This isnât exactly new, either.
