About 15 or so years ago I was investigating a possible motorcycle trip from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. One cannot even pass through it on a bike. You need to put your bike on a ferry from Panama to Colombia. The Panamerican Highway stops at the Chucunaque River. After that it’s miles of dubious footpaths through the jungle, across rivers that might have had the bridge washed out due to the frequent flash floods.

Why would Colombia want to? Venezuela still has a military, albeit a very corrupt one. The soldiers still get fed.

@thedukeofchutney468 The Maduro Regime feeds the poor, and that is why Maduro is “popular” among the poor. If you want to eat, you come to his rallies and show support for the United Socialist Party. The middle class is the biggest part of the population that is being starved (taking a cue from the Soviets of the 20s and 30s) and devastated. They are the largest part that is fleeing their country. (Economically they are now just as impoverished as any one else, but they are still considered members of an enemy class.) The political opposition is persecuted both officially by the government security apparatus, the military and unofficially by paramilitary gangs of thugs. Peter is right to talk about the famine, but it’s important to remember that the Venezuelans fleeing the criminal socialist dictatorship of Maduro are political asylum seekers, not economic immigrants. The Central Americans are a slightly different story. They endured decades of U.S. interference in their politics during the Cold War. I’m not one of the “blame America” contingent. There were serious concerns about Communism on our doorstep, and the Soviets were materially supporting rebellions. I just think we handled it badly on the whole. Long story short, we had a hand in creating instability in Central America, which allowed organized crime to gain a toe hold. The thousands of Central Americans fleeing the violent crime in their countries is what you call “blowback”, the unintended consequences of our foreign policy.

Imported useless widgets don’t contribute to GDP at all. But you are correct that GDP isn’t everything. What matters is if some value is being created. You can increase GDP by hiring someone to dig a hole and fill it in, but it doesn’t contribute any value. (Or build blocks and blocks of high rise apartments that will never be occupied.) It shows up as GDP, but doesn’t contribute anything to the economy. But back to widgets. Imported widgets might not contribute directly to the GDP of our country, but in some cases they might increase productivity. However, you said useless widgets. I’m curious as to which useless widgets you’re talking about and either managed to avoid or have gotten rid of? I’ll tell you what, the most annoying thing to me about widgets in general, whether useful or useless, is battery management. Chargers, charging cables, remembering to charge the batteries. 😅 Keeping track of it all definitely decreases my quality of life.

They have no data, just anecdotes and unsupported claims that emanate from of the union that represents border patrol agents. That union has an obvious agenda: it wants the government to hire more agents. Quite possibly I am overestimating them: they might be getting the BP union garbage second or third hand. But basically, you’re arguing with intellectually lazy people, people whose laziness trumps honesty. Why do you bother? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Chavez then and Maduro now, weren’t and aren’t socialist in anything but name. They are a mafia. The famine is artificial and is used to punish all but the most enthusiastic supporters. If you want to eat, you attend the United Socialist Party rallies.

I think you misunderstand the intended effects of our broken system. The goal of our broken system is to create fear among a subset of of the voting population so the fear mongers can keep getting elected. It’s working perfectly. There have been many attempts to reform our immigration system that have had bipartisan support, but a faction within one of our political parties has blocked that reform every single time. And now they have control of that party. Peter joked that the only way to stop people from coming to the U.S. was to shoot them, but there are quite a few that think that’s a serious proposal and are in favor of it.

You don’t know what you’re talking about, and I suspect that your ignorance has at least two sources. The main source of your ignorance is your lack of curiosity about the larger world. Your second source of ignorance is your reliance on breathless news sources that profit from generating fear. (And I would argue that this reliance is due to mental laziness, which is related to the first cause.) You do not understand immigration laws, or you would know that many Venezuelans that are entering the country qualify for political asylum. Coming from Venezuela, they at a minimum can apply and be allowed to enter while the process begins. You also didn’t really watch the video, did you? Like I said, you lack curiosity.

98 that Chavez was elected, and his “reforms” failed and caused problems, but I don’t think it was until 2010 that it really became clear what was going on and how bad it was going to get politically for the country (under Maduro especially). It was like a slow take over by a mafia.

But the socialism/Marxism window dressing for a corrupt mafia, which the Venezuelan government is. They haven’t implemented a single socialist program that hasn’t been used to funnel money to the inner circles of the ruling party. The populist part comes from throwing crumbs to the poor who support Maduro and the party. The opposition has been crushed. I think all such regimes end up this way, even when they start as genuine believers in Marxism. Look at China, look at Cuba, look at Nicaragua, and most of all, look at the Soviet Union and its remnant federation. The origins of Russia as a Mafia state go back to the time of Lenin. But make no mistake. The leaders can cling to power for a looooooong time.
