@davidparadis490 I was going to challenge your claim that this has been a feature since the country’s inception, but I had to think about. And I have to agree with you (but I also have to quibble with you about your starting point). By the 1790s, there were two opposing political factions, the Federalists and Jeffersonians. Each had very different visions for our country. So you definitely have a point. But the quibble is that this division didn’t form until after the adoption of our constitution, which wasn’t signed until 1787 and not ratified until 1788. The inception of the U.S. was 1776. The formation of our government and current form of democratic republic starts with the adoption of the Constitution.

The degradation of equipment is built into the governmental policies and the business plans. Before construction begins, the energy companies must post a bond covering the cost of removal and clean up of closed installations. The life span of 10-20 years for wind turbine installations is part of the business plan of the companies. By the time one installation is shut down, the company will be ready (or already has) brought another facility online somewhere. If a company goes bankrupt, the assets are divided amongst the creditors, with some assets being sold to convert to cash. If there is any life left in the wind farm, someone will buy it. If not, the previously posted bond will be used to decommission the wind farm. The system works more or less. It’s still a hell of a lot better than having the federal government build, own, and operate wind farms.

@Zarkil Kicking the disposal can down the road is still better than climate change. Our grandchildren are going to curse us either way. Likely they’d find something to curse us for even if we solved both the nuclear waste disposal issue and the climate change crisis. 🙃 And when they do, I’ll do what I always do: blame it on the Boomers. 😂
