@Graahk-r8u I don’t even think you can call them maquiladoras anymore. There is a tightly integrated cross-border automotive manufacturing system and this has created cross-border expansion into other fields of industry, like plastics and petrochemicals. And it’s a major reason why fewer Mexicans are crossing to the U.S. in search of jobs, a fact that escapes most of the low information anti-immigrationists. Their inability to distinguish Mexicans from people of other nationalities is weird.

NAFTA has so transformed Mexican industry that Mexicans crossing the border aren’t much of a problem. It’s been Central Americans fleeing their failed states. Should we risk taking a look at why they’ve failed? Do we want to look at U.S. interventionist policies that turned the region into a war zone throughout the 70s and 80s? We broke the region. We had damn good reasons to do so, but we also created a problem and that problem is biting us on the ass.

The wall envisioned by Trump was stupid. Listen to how he has described it over the years. He’s talking about a perimeter defense. What you are talking about is a defense-in-depth, which is not only more effective, it’s a more efficient use of resources. Walls and geographic features are an important part of funneling flows of people, whether its soldiers, immigrants, or people trying to get into or out of a football stadium.

I don’t think the original commenter nor a number of succeeding commenters understood anything. Obviously, they are not interested in understanding but only interested in political attacks, muddying issues, and dispensing disinformation. I do not think the border crisis was manufactured, but it has been evident that the crisis is being maintained as a campaign issue by one political party that doesn’t doesn’t have much else going for it policy-wise.

by the very fact that you cannot even spell border correctly, your opinion on anything related to the border is of absolutely no consequence. If border issues were something you actually cared about, you’d learn how to spell the damn word.

And how many people do you need to maintain that security infrastructure? And how much is it going to cost to maintain the physical structure of the wall along the entire length of the border? How do you secure the cameras? The reason people don’t understand what you’re talking about is that Trump promised a physical perimeter wall. The technology you are describing doesn’t actually require a 2,000 mile physical wall. But let’s be honest about what Trump was really promising. He was promising a symbolic wall.

Do you make each soldier responsible for 8 feet or do you make a team of 8 responsible for 64 feet. In either case, is the individual soldier or team responsible for their own supplies? Do they haul their own water and food into their area of responsibility?

Nah. Biden is implementing some of the REPUBLICAN policies, but they weren’t Trump’s. Remember, he’s out of office and didn’t take an active hand in forming the policies that were hammered out in the Senate. Nor could he take credit for them. Go look at the history of the legislation, starting with the tying together of Border reform with Ukraine aid. That was the key moment, really. Once the two were linked, the Republicans could dictate the border bill. And they did. And Trump blew it up, because he needs unresolved border issues or he doesn’t have a major campaign issue.

Thank you for sharing your unique view on the issue. You should be writing editorials for major newspapers. We need to demand that Congress enact laws to deport people that are not here lawfully. Quite frankly, I am shocked that there aren’t already laws in place to deport them. 🙄

While there’s a good chance Peter will comment sooner or later, why are you interested in his opinion on that topic? It’s well outside his expertise and there are much better analysts trying to figure out what is going on. You need to learn who is the best source of insight on different topics. Asking Pete for his thoughts on this Kursk offensive is like me asking you what sex with a woman is like. If that is information I needed, I should ask someone with experience and knowledge.

@carefree85a He has no facts why Pete is incorrect, only feelings. I think Pete is a little bit off about the reason Trump shut down the Border/Ukraine Aid bill. It wasn’t to deny Biden the credit, it was to deny the Senate Republicans the credit. It was (or would have been) a great Republican victory, but Trump had no way of taking credit for it. And if Trump can’t be the hero, no one can. The GOP conference in the Senate was and is in the minority. But McConnell (or his acolytes) performed some magnificent maneuvering to get Biden, Schumer, and the Dems over the proverbial barrel. Let’s make no mistake, this was a Republican bill. Calling it bipartisan was a bandaid for the Democrats. And if the House had been doing its job instead of acting as a launch pad for maga social media influencers, maybe we would have had this legislative victory. I don’t know how directly McConnell was involved given his cognitive problems, but this had all the hallmarks of McConnell’s street fighting. Threatening to block Ukraine Aid unless it was linked to the Border bill was a risky but genius move that paid off. And once they were linked, Republicans pretty much dictated the contents of the border bill.
