  1.  @devalapar7878  A clear eyed pacifist knows that pacifism must be defended. Aggressors and belligerents go after the weak. Strong defense deters aggression. Having lots of friends can deter aggression if you can pool defensive resources. I think there’s a long held misperception that “Cold Warriors” were bloodthirsty war-loving Hawks. I think that the truth is that they were both peace loving and realistic about how to keep the peace.

  2. Nah, but yeah, maybe. The U.S. is in the process of rebuilding its own capacity. If we want to accelerate that, it would be better to utilize shipyards of our closest neighbors, and encourage their expansion. That doesn’t mean we can’t buy components and trade technology. We can learn from each other. I dare say we have been learning from one another over the past 60-70 years in a variety of areas.

  3. I don’t want to dismiss any of Japan’s achievements since WWII. I’ll even acknowledge that they almost won the great California Real Estate War in the 1980s. But they’ve been very reluctant to honorably admit their WWII atrocities and war crimes. Some of the things they did were as bad as what the Nazis did. The Pacific alliance will be stronger if Japan can get over this false pride and apologize sincerely for what they did in WWII and the pre-WWII wars.

  6.  @markgarcia8253 That wasn’t isolationism. That was forward thinking economic warfare in the face of shortsighted isolationism. There is a basic difference between isolationism and being a power that engages with the world. Engagement means protecting your interests and making friends and allies. Isolationism is pretending you don’t have those interests so you have the excuse to retreat from them. Isolationism is walking away from friends and allies in their hour of need. Isolationism is seeking peace through cowardice. Tell that to the next isolationist bozo you encounter.
