@DaggothJr Reagan’s excess spending was mostly on defense, which was desperately needed at the time. Historical context matters.

@ColonelFredPuntridge Luttig 100%. Bolton, yeah, maybe too much, but I don’t think of him as a first tier FP conservative. He was second or third tier and got lucky. Bolton is an interesting guy. As a second tier FP adviser, he was a careerist street fighter (which is how he pulled himself up through the FP jungle). He had extreme views that he used to garner attention—he was a good counterbalance. I find it interesting that became a little more moderate and more adult when he was elevated to the top tier. At the end of the day I’ll ding him 25% for being too damn self-interested and self-promoting, so he gets a 75%. What about Kasich? He was often billed as a moderate but I’d still call him a conservative where it matters. A supposed “moderate conservative” can pull the country more to the right, whereas a hardcore conservative will divide the country. Edit: What about Romney? 100% conservative, 100% honorable. Discarded by the GOP because he couldn’t unseat Obama. He’d be the perfect antidote to Trump fever if only the GOP was willing to admit it was sick. If the pro-Trump delusions in this thread are any indication, the GOP is happy in its fever dream. 😢

He sort of is, but not out of imitation. It’s because Trump was dressing up liberal foreign policy and trade policy as conservative. You want to talk about trans? There’s your trans.

@rllapte it’s not so much a projection of reality as “confidently expressed opinion”. The trick is to understand that some of Pete’s opinions are expert opinions and some are just opinions (albeit opinions with some thought backing it up, and not just “some A-hole’s opinion”. I wouldn’t call him delusional, even if/when he is wrong.

I can’t stand the Bernie cult, but I don’t think there are many of them. His economic policies would be disastrous if they were implemented, but I don’t think they can be effectively put into practice. Bernie would need a Congress just as radical as he is, so to get anything passed he would have to water down his proposals. My opinion: we could survive Bernie, the “Democratic Party Trump”. So I guess I’m going to vote for Biden. What a weird state of affairs. I voted for GOP presidential candidates for 24 years before Trump and was locally active in the GOP for most of the same period (probably longer because I was a big Reagan fan before I could even vote).

@Head-ck4hu Newt and Cruz? That doesn’t make you conservative. It makes you pro-Asshole. Did you also vote for Patrick Buchanan?

I liked how he led off with the Bernie Cult before flipping it back on the Trumpers. The Bernie cult is your garden variety cult-of-personality. The Trump cult is way weirder. Wayyyyy weirder. Like mentally ill weird.

I’m a center left conservative. Lol. I didn’t change, the label “conservative” was perverted into something at the extreme end of right wing. My biggest concern with Biden is his age. He’s fine now, but he’s not getting younger and his cognitive abilities will probably get worse. The worse case scenario is that as his cognitive abilities degrade, he’ll drift further to the left. Or be pushed their by his advisers. There are potential GOP candidates that are right of center (by the old definitions) that I’d be very happy with. But if Trump gets the nomination, I’ll vote for Biden (and I’d even consider voting for Sanders).

Or an airport, which often does feel like a form of incarceration.

@E4439Qv5 Was that an intentional pun and not a misspelling? If a pun, it was a pretty good one.
