Ah, Pete. You’re making an amateur mistake. India wasn’t pro-Soviet. India was pro-India and avoided aligning itself with either side. The rookie mistake is the knee jerk thinking of “If you’re not for me, you’re against me.” India was literally the original “Third World country” when the First, Second, Third Worlds referred to Western Democracies, Communist Bloc, and Non-Aligned nations. The schema described the geopolitics, not the economic development. It was the policy of India (and other nations) to avoid entanglements with either side and go there own way, looking out for their own interests. They could lean one way or the other according to circumstances of the moment. It’s really disappointing when Pete gets political history so wrong. This is basic Cold War history.
