  3. They don’t have to be a colony, they just have to give up their goal of being the boss of all their neighbors. They could engage in all the trade they want, not sacrifice an iota of sovereignty or security. They only have to stop threatening everyone else and get along with a rules-based order. That’s the damndest thing about all this, but it’s important to understand where they’re coming from. They cling to the fantasy that they deserve to be a superpower.
