  5. The scariest airline experience I ever had was over the pacific, flying from Japan to Anchorage. About halfway there, one of the engines failed. The pilot came over the intercom and told us the situation. The three other engines were functioning normally, so all this meant was a delay of an hour. However, a little while later, we all heard a big banging sound. A second engine had burned out. The pilot assured us that we were safe, but there would be an additional delay. When the third engine went, we had to divert to an old unused air force airstrip in the Aleutians. I remember thinking, “If the last engine goes, we’re going to be up here indefinitely.”
