The choice facing Russia is how badly they are going to lose. If they leave Ukraine now, some sanctions will be lifted. Their economy will recover eventually. If the Russians don’t leave, their economy will be destroyed beyond recovery. The longer they stay, the more damage to their economy. I don’t know if Putin will be able to remain in power in any case. Between the Russian people and his criminal cronies (the oligarchs), he’s lost his base of political support. His criminal cronies want to remove him. I’m sure Putin is physically protected from assassination , so they will be very careful about taking a shot at him. But I suspect they are already conspiring against him.

The supply lines in Western Ukraine are still open. It will be exceedingly difficult and costly for the Russian army to interdict these lines, possibly impossible. The Ukrainians have what is basically a “Ho Chi Minh” trail like the Vietnamese used. Shall we call it the “Zelensky Trail”? Putin and the Russian Generals thought they could invade Ukraine on the cheap, but it’s turning quite costly. They cannot commit all their reserves to the fight or they are defenseless in other sectors outside Ukraine. They have to maintain control within Russia, which is becoming harder precisely because this war is unpopular.

@McCRBen You get it. Putin has to pay back the oligarchs for the previous sanctions. He was unable to get them lifted. The Putin crime syndicate thought the invasion of Ukraine would be easy and they did not expect the massive sanctions they now face. They thought NATO would take weeks to get its sh¡t together, if it could get together at all. It’s only a matter of time before the oligarchs take Putin out. Economic warfare works against kleptocracy.

@OAlexable You’re delusional. Even the ethnic Russians, the Russian-Ukrainians are united against Putin. Turns out that they are also patriotic Ukrainians. There are very few pro-Putin Ukrainians left after the invasion, and they are paid in rubles. Putin buys their loyalty, but the pay is becoming worthless.

Your savings are worthless, if you can even access it. Your banks are shutting down, your food will run out (you will soon be paying 120 rubles for a potato on the black market). You’re under economic siege, and it’s self imposed. Russia only needs to leave Ukraine and the damage will stop. Oh, well, your gas prices remain low. Maybe you will learn to eat and drink petrochemicals. Your “friends” will have difficulty propping you up. The support will slow to a trickle, and most of that trickle will go to the oligarchs, not the Russian people. Not to you. Truthfully, the Chinese are already pissed. This invasion is already messing with their plans to expand their own influence. Xi himself is angry with Russia and Putin, and help from him will be minimal. And what help he does give will not be free. Venezuela is a joke. Maduro is only a threat to his own people.

@Sal Spencer Our military is actually smaller in numbers, but we don’t need as many as Russia. Most are conscripts, and most need to stay at their posts throughout Russia to control the population. But you are right that we are better equipped and have the technological advantage.

@Amauvy The Russians will enjoy eating their energy, I’m sure. They’ll find a way to make the human body metabolize gasoline, and they’ll get their vitamins from natural gas. Good luck with that.
