  1. The Taliban has a lot of motivations to cooperate. It’s not so much that they’re worried about re-invasion as they’re worried about ongoing destabilization. They’re now in charge (more or less) of their country. They have their own extremists problems that will challenge them for power (Sunni radicals). I’m reminded of Vietnam and Nicaragua, two countries were Communist/Nationalist movements won but that didn’t turn into the threats that we thought they would. Vietnam actually fought Communist China a few years after Vietnam was reunified. In Nicaragua, elections took place and a conservative government was elected (they’ve since gone back to a socialist government). I don’t think the Taliban and the U.S. are going to be best buddies anytime soon, but there is no reason why we can’t come to a diplomatic understanding.

  2. If you had been alive during the Vietnam War, you would have believed. If you had studied the history and culture of Afghanistan, you might not be surprised.
