@danieldickson8591 Also, they don’t seem to be captured in the sense that they gave up after losing a battle or skirmish. They made their way to a safe place to voluntarily surrender or they voluntarily surrendered when they made contact. At least that’s the picture I get.

I think you might have it backwards. The law itself specifically mentions “parading” for purposes of insult and ridicule of the POWs as the banned behavior. The letter of the law is the strict interpretation. A broader interpretation would fall under “spirit of the law”, and is a more contentious and subjective area. The strict interpretation, as I understand it, would allow these interviews of POWs, even for propaganda purposes, so long as the POWs aren’t being insulted or ridiculed. I might be the one who has it backwards, but this is my understanding of letter of the law vs. spirit of the law.

@jacqdanieles It’s useless arguing with these trolls. Use the reporting function and report them for promoting terrorism or misinformation. Ivan is clearly supporting terrorism. Others peddle disinformation.

I get that. But what if they’re lied to by their commanders? What if they’re told, “There’s a platoon of Ukrainian soldiers in that building, trying to set an ambush. Blow the building up.” It’s not always clear cut.

Even if it goes against a broader interpretation of the Geneva Convention, it pales in comparison with not just the indiscriminate bombardment of civilian areas, but the intentional targeting to which the Russians have admitted they’re doing (case in point being the maternity hospital). There’s rule breaking and then there’s out and out crimes against humanity.

@furiousapplesack There’s a really bad historical precedent for that. Hitler pressed conquered people into his armies or to work as slave labor in his factories. That’s why you had Eastern Europeans fighting for the Nazis in Normandy. It’s a bad look and feeds Putin’s narrative that Ukrainians are Neo-Nazis. On the other hand, treat the POWs well and they might volunteer to be interviewed (as I think is going on here). I have an even better idea. The U.S. is sending $14 billion in aid. Allocate a few million dollars and send these POWs on an all expense paid vacation to Disney World. Then interview them about their treatment as POWs—I bet there will be a stampede of surrendering Russian conscripts.
