@jonathandnicholson an unborn child is an unchild. There is no scientific basis to call an embryo or a fetus a child. Neither is there a Bibical basis. The Bible is contradictory and unclear on the matter. You have to pick and choose Bible passages and perform theological pretzel logic to speak with authority on the matter. That’s what we call dogma.

Who does have standing to petition the Supreme Court? This procedural decision means that anti-abortion groups have to rethink their legal strategy. The only way that this will be finally settled is through Congress outlawing the drugs in question. That means abortion foes need control of both chambers of Congress and the Presidency.

@MH_6160 Yes, on self control. BUT a resounding NO on government control, which is what the anti-abortionists are trying to impose on us.

@missdana296 if I am understanding you correctly, you’re morally against abortion but you think the state should stay out of medical decisions. As a former Republican and still a conservative, I agree with that position. I don’t believe that abortion should be the first option, but that decision is up to the patient, not the government. What we can do as either private individuals or as a polity is to provide viable options to abortion so that women don’t feel forced to have an abortion because of economic circumstances or social pressures. This goes against my small government tendency, but it’s a compromise I can live with that balances liberty, social issues, and the morality of pregnancy termination. More generally, I think the GOP has strayed from the path with such initiatives to impose morality via government. It’s “back door socialism” that increases government social control over individual liberty and increases the size and power of government. Philosophically, it diminishes the power of individuals to make their own decisions and live with the consequences. This is the opposite of conservatism.

It might be back, but they’re going to need a new strategy to overcome the standing hurdle. What is that strategy?
