Something like that. Putin promised the plum of Ukraine’s resources to his fellow Oligarchs to retain their support. They’re at the end of their patience with Putin because they’ve been hurt by previous sanctions against them (see Magnititsky Act). With the even greater sanctions being leveled, and with more to come, Putin absolutely has to take over Ukraine or his partners will dump him. He’s not going to concede. Negotiations are a delaying tactic and an attempt to divide Ukraine’s supporters. He makes nuclear threats because he is cornered and he fears his own criminal organization most of all.

So, Ukraine is the mother, and the country governed by Putin and centered in Moscow is the offspring. If unification is important to Putin, he should surrender to Ukraine.

Then you’re not an American patriot. You’re anti-democracy. You sound like you’re fully subscribed to Russian disinformation and you sound like one of those “blame America” types. Actual American patriots don’t need to brag about their patriotism. Only scoundrels do that.

I suppose this report could have put more emphasis that Ukraine is the historical source of Russian culture and society, putting the lie to Putin’s assertion that Ukraine traditionally belongs to Moscow. If anything, Moscow should be subservient to Kiev, if we are to accept the underlying logic of historical imperative. We could also look more in depth at recent history, particularly Russia’s “stewardship” of Ukraine. First, look at the Holodomor. Second, consider that Russia sacrificed Ukraine to the Nazis in 1941 when the Nazis invaded. They weren’t prepared to defend it and sacrificed the people of Ukraine to Hitler’s murderous SS when it was occupied. (If you were to research this deeper, you might be surprised to learn that Moscow only supported those partisan groups it controlled. Otherwise, they were thrown to the Nazi wolves. So I think this “historical” justification for war is just a smokescreen. The true motivation is right before our noses: Putin’s lust for power and his desire to pillage Ukraine of whatever wealth he can beat out of it.
