@davidradtke160 well, there was that time he helped the Republican Guard—quite decent of him if your were an Iraqi soldier. And I’m sure Al Capone is smiling down on him from heaven (or smiling up from hell). But seriously, Geraldo Rivera is an opportunistic ambitious exhibitionist and sensationalist, but he somehow still has some moral/ethical fibre at his core. It might not be well developed, but it’s there. It’s how he understands right from wrong and is able to distinguish the truth from lies, when the chips are down. When it comes to our 245 year national experiment in Democracy, he gets that we’ve moved beyond “entertainment by controversy”. This is why he’s not a total P.o.S. But what’s more interesting and chilling is how Dan Bongo is repeating the Nazi trope of the “Stab in the Back”, the lie that helped bring Hitler to power. It should be very clear by now that the comparison of the GOP with the Nazi Party is not hyperbole nor is it a superficial comparison. The GOP has embraced (and updated) both Nazi ideology and Nazi propaganda techniques.

@brentwalker3300 I think it took living abroad (it’s been ten years now) for me to realize that conservatism doesn’t have all the answers, and that we should be open to solutions from any direction when it comes to our most challenging problems. Looking in from the outside helped me open my eyes to the hyperpartisan nature of our current politics—a hyperpartisanship fostered by my formerly beloved GOP. (To be honest, I saw this as far back as 2006 when I left the GOP.) I truly never expected that the GOP itself would become one of our nation’s biggest problems, and I wonder if I would really see it if I hadn’t removed myself from local politics. I never saw business-as-usual liberal knee jerk politics as an existential threat (and I never mischaracterized liberals as socialists). Liberals are not, and have never been, a threat to the country, but the racism, authoritarianism, and populism that now passes as conservatism is.
