  1. Different takes, but they’re not in disagreement. I saw Juan’s breakdown first. Mentour’s explanation goes into more detail, but Juan gave me the gist. One thing he said that remained in my mind was that sometimes experienced pilots get complacent, and that can lead to an error in judgement. I’m not a pilot, but this statement has broader applications beyond aviation!

  3. Very true about margins. I’m a motorcycle rider, which some consider to be a lapse in judgement itself. A biker needs to avoid piling on more lapses and running out of road. I used to live not far from some beautiful winding canyon roads, and almost every weekend, some squid failed to make a curve. The worst aftermath I saw was some kid that leaned over the centerline into oncoming traffic. There were worse fatalities, but the rider ended up at the bottom of a cliff, so I can’t claim to have witnessed anything beyond S&R preparing to rappel.
