@aquariumdude7829 the ammo and also the fact by that point the lee design had been in use with the british for nearly 50 years, thats alot of logistics set up for the system, small parts replacements, spare stocks, huge amounts of new old and refurbished models in inventory, and at the time besides the US M1 and Russia (SVT series) no one was really fielding semi autos in any meaningful quantity, especually not any nation they anticipated fighting, after WW1 they figured the days of european wars where over, they where instead planning around being a colonial power asserting themselves over tribes that either did not have firearms at all, or did not have modern ones in considerable number
In short, they figured they had plenty of time and saw no urgent need to rush it
