  17. Yeah i dont trust it, this guy says they are allegedly good intentioned but the ATF has done so much horrific stuff it seems like you are playing games with your life in contacting them. Lets say great grand pappy dies and you pick up a couple of his guns, you see a norinco AK and assume that its just one of the 11 million semi auto ones that got imported in the 80s. you dont pay much attention to it then it goes in the safe. a year or two later you get to looking at it, check what it is and call the ATF, what if they decide that you where initially trying to hide it from them? Its all fun and games until you get ruby ridged

  27. To be frank, a revolver is innocent enough looking that i doubt anyone would give him trouble, also muzzle breaks are legal in CA. Now where you get into debates is stuff like the A2 muzzle devise which is a break that also supresses flash. Hence why on some websites you see it sold as a break and on some as a flash hider, basically so if someone in cali got harrased over it they could hold up a recipt. worth the risk? thats for the individual to decide

Considering the average combat load seems to be in between 6 and 9 mags, most guns are not even carried with enough ammo for that to be a problem.

  55. funcounting the design is hard to adapt to larger caliber as if you look at the nagant action the part that pushes the cylinder forward is a piece of metal milled out of the trigger that physicaly pushes the cylinder forward into the front of the gun. it also gives the nagant its notoriously bad trigger pull. if you applied that to a larger caliber you would need a even thicker tab. which would result in a even worse trigger pull. even if the parts where perfectly polished any grain of sand dirt or dust would devolve it into a full body effort to get the trigger pulled.

  116.  @metalburner357  Solid point, zinc is absolutely a workable casting material for even an out of the garage shop to anyone with a degree of competency. Magnesium is what i use as a starter for exothermic welding, not exactly a material id feel comfortable working with under high heat or in its molten form. Im sure someone will chime in and say they do it all the time and so on but as someone who makes the stuff oxidize on purpose, ill leave casting it to someone else.

Civilians are trying to get shots in the same hole where as the military cares about if it can hit a person within 300 yards. I dont know i think quite the opposite, i have a model 12 that slamfires, and out of stubborn determination i wanted to get good at it, It can be quicker than conventional shooting but only with alot of practace, because in the process of bringing the pump forward its easy to throw your aim. after sacrificeing many cases of cheap birdshot, i can say comfortably my slamfire times are infact faster, but it requires far more concentration to aim and kind of requires a shooting form of its own. Only real practical use i could see would be bird hunting, because the thing is while it is quicker, its not much quicker, and it requires focus that i cannot imagine youd have while being shot at also doing it accurately at any kind of distance requires shooting from a stand still, which again, does not seem conducive to surviveing a war.

I would say as a combat rifle as ive said before, the AR is a better option. but not everyone requires or wants a combat rifle. If a guys only priority is to shoot at coyotes around a ranch what happens at high round counts really is not a big deal

  164. They where so heavily overbuilt that as long as fresh springs are kept they will pretty much function. Remember in their time they where considered more as area denial emplacements, so it was expected that they would be firing hundreds of thousands if not millions of rounds over their service life peppering beaten zones, so its that kind of picture the designers had when putting these together generally. If i recall correctly post war the British tested a maxium and it fired 7 million rounds with only field level matanence (barrel swap, springs adjusted/changed. and when you consider the frames are milled steel boxes, it makes sense

Which I think gets into a huge part of the civil war itself, the reason they wanted to hold on to slavery was for the most part simply because free labor, as horrible as it was, many of these people had entire businesses built off of human labor being treated like machine labor. As a result they knew that should slavery become illegal they would rapidly loose there financial stability. With a large part of these people involved in government, boom, succession happens. CapnHolic Depends, some of it could be hand made by modifying brass but some is completely proprietary down to the case, you would have to reverse engineer an original case to create tooling which for a garage operation, is not really financaly practical. now PPU of Serbia DOES do it on a larger scale for many calibers, hence how you can get 9mm styar ammo and stuff like that. according to there sales people if the order is a minimum of 100,000 rounds they will do any caliber requested.

The parts kit community takes what by all means is basically scrap metal that was a gun, and somehow Frankensteins it into a functioning piece. Because you WILL pay a premium compared to now. Per the time it was a specialty good. Casting aluminum also requires astronomically higher temps compared to zinc, twice + depending on alloy, So considering the time and place and best estimating the mentality of folks at the time, while i cant be a mind reader, i cant see a reason that a out of garage shop would go through the price of obtaining, and the additional effort of casting, aluminum when for the use it would not really provide additional benefit. Keep in mind the aluminum available then was NOT the highly specialized stuff we see now, it was rudimentary and focused on weight over anything else.

  343. NormanMatchem I Was basing the number of off pictures I have seen online as well as some WW2 webgear  saw at a gunshow which had 3, 2 slot 1911 mag pouches. Now I there is a possibility that was something somebody put together themselves but it looked about right. im by no means saying it was standard as im pretty shure they where issued one pouch of 2 mags but its always a possibility that (Insert solder here) grabbed or traded for more of them.

Its not impossible that could happen at some point, the AR is an interesting design in the fact that it was not only a trailblazer in its own right, but by the quirks of its design the very same design choices that made it cost a bit more than its contemporaries in the 60s in the age of the CNC machine has made it incredibly inexpensive to produce even in smaller shops. Meanwhile the AKs economics of scale worked great, in the context of state run and equipped non profit arsenals. The assembly line gets set up with tax dollars and after that all your paying for is labor, In the modern context this doesn't check out, and while new Russian AKs are still cheaper than other options on the international military market, largely due to legacy machinery as the 100 series had heavy subsidies behind it, combined with the rapid price decrease of the AR platform you end up with a situation where a country that wants AKs, will likely just buy surplus cold war stock and be content, as for only a bit more than the cost of a new one, an AR becomes available.

Enfeilds are great, but don't get ahead of yourself, a ar-15 can produce the same accuracy but faster and with less reloading. Turn it to a AR-10 and its a clear victory. Still, Enfeilds are very functional rifles.

I collect gasmasks aswell and I have a Finnish mask that you can tell was carried around (and moderately abused) by the previous owner. the lences are scratched up and the inside looks like it had parts carved out for user comfort. the thing BARELY passed the inspection to be put back into stock (I have the original exeptence sticker)

Walt Lars they have super sonic loads aswell. generaly the gunner would be issued one the other or both depending on the mission and role of the gunner. a squad marksman would probably be issued a supersonic AP ammo (though the guns are intagraly suppressed so theres still some positive effect on sound albeit minimal) while a scout would probably be issued mostly subsonic with AP for backup. on another note all these rounds have hardend steel cores and are designed to be armor pierceing.

  635. +Matthew Plascencia It depends on the model and the filter/filter type (Im a collector) For example if you have 2 filters with the same protective qualitys, the bigger ones will breath easier simply because you don't have to draw air through as condenced a material. different millitarys go on different sides of the spectrum with most US military filters attempting to be as compact as possible, leading to modern US army filters such as the C2A1 having slightly more breathing resistance than lets say, a Canadian C7  now this comes from my experience with modern filters, I haven't worn any WW1 masks as they are often not in wearable condition at this point, aswell as the fact that gasmasks pre 1960s in the US and pre mid 70s in eastern Europe contain asbestos. which obviously you don't want to inhale. So with that being said I have only tried modern safe masks.

Haveing a model 12 that slamfires and immediately going about testing this after my purchase, with practice via haveing 3 man sized targets about 20 yards off fireing to hit each one twice in one run, slam fireing is marginally faster. but the key is you need to practace the motion enough that your not throwing your aim when you do it, theres a wierd motion and cadence about it where your basically pushing the gun down into the pump so you end up at roughly the point you started before recoil. how practical that would be when getting shot at? dont know, probably was useful for birdhunting back before semis where super commonplace

The beyonet lug thing might simply be because he only had one barrel to go off of at the time. I could also see some guy useing aluminum post war because it's easy to mill.   955. @Michael Miner Absolutely, however in the current climate we are never going to just get our rights back in one fell swoop, you have to do a little marketing, think about it, if you went straight to deregulating full autos the media would flip and it would never pass, you have to be gradual, drop the Hughes amendment, keep the NFA and people will quickly forget the whole thing even happened, it will become the new normal. from there, then you can push for canning the NFA, but the media is uncomfortable with even semi autos right now, theres no way they would let the deregulation of select fire weapons get by in one swoop

  976. Colt guy here, the python is cool because its slick and looks pretty, but mechanically it is based off the 1904 D frame, which was designed for 38 spc. The way the lockwork functions it basically treats the hand as wear component, it takes a beating and is designed to wear out in exchange for theoretically protecting other parts from wearing. Back in the day when you could just send it to colt for a tune up no big deal, now days, you have to find someone who knows what they are doing to fit a hand. then you have to do that again, every 5000 rounds.

  986. They are correct. There is a difference between "cheap" ammo, and "Expired ammo" Any gun worth its salt should run wolf for example, because its newly produced and of good quality. At the same time, ammo older than 60 years gets funky, thats just how it is, so if it is that old you better be getting an absolute steal and not just "could have bought new wolf for the same price"

Well now we are smarter, we disassemble them, then manufacturers buy reciver shells from forign countries, finish them here and reassemble the weapon, or import the weapon as a single stack and finish it out here and the end of the day we can still have whatever we want it just takes what should be a 500 dollar gun and makes it an 800 dollar gun with all the added labor
