If I say "I think islam is an evil ideology driven by conquest and not a religion" that is not only a legitimate opinion it is backed by facts. Others may disagree and thus we have an exchange of ideas. "Hate speech" laws shut this discussion down by killing it at birth.   20. I think the USA is closer to Germany re: Birthday Cake. A "Birthday Cake" is a cake specifically bought or made to celebrate a birthday of ANY flavor. What makes it "birthday" is icing - frequently extravagant - and candles. My favorite cake is Angel Food and when my family has celebrated they always provided an Angel Food cake. Until you showed me those products I never heard nor thought of "Birthday Cake" as a flavor. I think it is just the multiple flavors of the icing on top. One last note: The craft of baking has all but disappeared from the American home, as has cooking. Ask anyone born after the Baby Boom what ganache is and you will get a blank look unless the person is a pastry chef (I guess we do not have "bakers" any more).

  29. The USA never signed on to the international compact on wine definitions. Internationally, "Champaign" does mean sparkling wine made from grapes from the Champaign region of France. This can be validated by looking at the label that says "Fixee Controlle" on true French wine (this is also true for other regional varietals such as Burgundy) In general the CA version of Burgundy is Cabernet but that is an affectation. The proper international term for sparkling wine is "Brut." Honest USA producers will use the term. Others, such as bazillion gallon creator Gallo will just sleaze out and say "Champaign." If the label is "Brut" at least you have an honest producer.

  36. There is no country in the world that faces and creates guilt for sins of the past than the USA. Anyone who has traveled anywhere outside the USA knows most countries are overtly racist and misogynist or, worse, covertly so. The USA airs its dirty laundry and the world joyously piles on, saying, "you even ADMIT you be racist!" while ignoring or covering over their own. There is no more heterogeneous country in the world and despite the many problems that causes (honor killings, anyone?) we handle it better than any other country possibly could.

  38. That was my reaction. For example, 2 or 3 hours in a nice restaurant with no rush is not unusual. I am in a beach community and there is no a/c and the windows open all the way. This was also true in Seattle and Malibu. I guess Cincinnati is a bit more backwards. More likely she just hasn't been to the right places. A note about doorknobs. The ADA demanded latches over knobs a decade+ ago. If you experience doorknobs it is from a home built in the 80's or earlier. I bet if I was to go to Germany and go to pre-1980s homes they would have knobs as well.
