  11. In the "Andy Warhol Diaries," Warhol talks about going to a Prince concert and the after-party. Warhol was impressed with how polite Prince was, personally greeting every guest and thanking them for coming. Warhol's driver was a big Prince fan so Warhol brought him along--it was a high point of his life that Prince spoke to him, thanked him, called him by name and shook his hand. Maybe Prince changed later when he became more famous, but I'd like to think not.

  18.  @irritated888  To expand on your comment, the "statistic" is bandied about that malaria has killed half of all the people who ever lived--in fact I read it just a few days ago in a list of "Amazing facts you never knew" or something like that. Apparently, though, that's a huge exaggeration, dating mainly from a 2002 article in Nature magazine. Exact numbers are impossible to come by, and estimates vary wildly, but a more sober and fairly credible estimate puts it closer to 5%--still a huge number, probably in the hundreds of millions, but a far cry from half.

  20. The late record producer John Hammond was also a Vanderbilt. His mother was a great-granddaughter of the Commodore. Very famous in his day, he is credited with "discovering," or least being an early champion of, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, and many, many more, including many renowned Jazz and Blues musicians. His son of a similar name, once a modestly famous blues musician, was, of course, also a Vanderbilt descendant.

  24. I knew it was coming: I knew someone would see fit to call him underrated. Simon could do a bio of Jesus or Mohammad and someone would refer to them as underrated. Wellington was underestimated by Napoleon, yes, but beyond that he was as far from "underrated" as it was possible to be, and he remains so to this day. What do you think "underrated" means, anyway.

  41. I can never understand why people say things like that. In what conceivable way was he underrated? Underrated by whom? Virtually any qualified critic of popular music of the era acknowledges as one of the greatest guitarists of all. Any musician of the time would say the same thing. If the general public don't instantly equate Prince with "great guitarist" it's because that was only part of his genius. He was also a great singer, songwriter, performer, producer. Is there anyone familiar with his music who says he wasn't also great on the guitar? Sure, there are some, probably here in this thread even, who will put him down because it inflates their own ego to trash someone whom everyone else admires. Their opinions don't count. Among those whose opinions are worth listening to, Prince could hardly be more highly rated.

  44. I was aware of that story, though I don't know any more than you outlined in your post. I actually visited Laos, and saw the former royal palace, now a museum, in Luang Prabang. I have thought that would make a very good subject for a video, but also felt it was probably too obscure a story to interest a lot of people. Also, many of the crucial facts are probably still unavailable to any foreign researcher. I was happily surprised to read your suggestion of it, but I won't get my hopes up.
