  5. President James Madison was at the Battle of Bladensburg in the war of 1812, while the American troops were under fire from the British. Granted, he could be considered more an observer than a participant. But was Washington in battle while in office as President?

  6. Martin Van Buren was the first U.S. president to be born a U.S. citizen. All those who preceded him were born British subjects.

  7. Technically he grew up as a British subject, so however he spoke it was technically with a British accent. It was probably quite different from the accent of a resident of London, for instance, though.
