Xilinx was known for their incredibly tight relationship with TSMC. AMD, having owned their own fabs previously, was already intimate with working directly with the lithography department, so they quickly ascended the same stairs with TSMC. Today AMD owns Xilinx, and it is speculated that their ultimate goal is to beat Apple to the leading edge and become the premier partner of TSMC. If that happens I think both Intel and Nvidia will be in long term trouble...

@Phoenix56801 Intel's node have been expected to get far better for the last 8 years. They've consequently missed their target by multiple years. Their last normal rollout was 14nm. TSMC makes 5 times more money than Intel. Do you really think they can keep up with someone who has that kind of dole AND knows that they literally live and die by their nodes?

@kristianTV1974 Xilinx has been working with TSMC since 2009 when they started using their 32nm process. Previously they had dual-supplier partnerships with UMC and Samsung. AMD sold of their fabs as Global Foundries in 2008 but GloFo didn't get their first non-AMD customer until 2010, so there was never a time frame in which Xilinx could have been a GloFo partner.

Z3U5 Samsung is behind the curve. They're good at cost optimizing the not-quite-bleeding-edge nodes. But that's the road to becoming a second supplier of budget friendly options. Not the road to being the "wow brand" so to speak. Nvidia, who only have GPUs, cannot afford to be seen as the budget option. They have zero leverage over SI/OEM bundling deals. If they're not outright attractive AMD and Intel can "bundle them into oblivion".
