YKKs classic all-metal "scoop" style zippers are the only ones that have never failed before the garment or footwear for me. Sure, most modern plastic zippers work great for low utilization stuff, but for jeans, jackets and boots I actively look for YKK. Fun fact: The Danish army insist on them.

Crappy stuff from H&M always has the flimsiest plastic SBS zippers, and they sell A LOT of almost single-use clothes.

Same. The Danish army insist on them, so after 17 years in the service, and never having one fail on me, it rubbed off on me and it's one of the few areas where I'm actually brand loyal.

@magfal Honestly I think we get our uniforms made in the same factory.

Most people think they're a local brand, as YKK has factories all over the world :P

@testman9541 If by medium teeth you mean the size typically used in jeans I beg to differ. I've never had one of those fail before the fabric in the crotch area was worn through.

@testman9541 "The crotch are wearing out and not being replaceable is not acceptable to me either"... have you ever owned jeans? They're made of cotton, not adamantium. And how would they sew the pants so that area is replaceable without it looking goofy? I mean, you have no less than four seems joining up in that area. And it's the area that constantly rubs on itself unless you walk like you shit your pants...

Then look for the all metal YKK zippers. I have never had those fail on me from ordinary wear ever. All the Danish army gear use YKK zippers (granted, with the coarsest teeth they make) and in my 17 years of service the most maintenance I've had to do on one was to re-clamp one of the teeth after I had a rather high speed "negotiation about the right of way" with a thick branch. The zipper still worked, but I had to wiggle it past the kinked tooth, so a pair of pliers was needed to force the one grabby leg, that had been bent a little sideways, comply.

Their heavy gauge metal zippers will outlive any garment. I have a leather jacket that is coming up on 30 years old, and despite an almost religious relationship with leather TLC it is starting to show it's age... but the zipper is as good as the day I bought it.
