  2. It needs a heavier barrel if it kicks that hard. In a short recoil operated gun it's the barrel speed which dictates the bolt speed. If you give it a heavier spring you increase the rate of fire. This can be a tradeoff you're willing to make (say 20% greater rate of fire in exchange for better controllability), but if your starting point is "kicks like mule", then going to 300% rate of fire (on 20 round magazines) is most certainly out of the question :P

  3. Their operating mechanisms are so fundamentally different that it's not even funny. They basically only have "has a recoil spring and shoots bullets" in common. You'd be better off starting from scratch with the MG42 mechanism and just welding on bits and bobs until you have something you like.

  4. Since it's short recoil operated it all comes down to barrel weight vs cartridge power. Put something like an M2 barrel on it and it can probably barely cycle.... But that kind of barrel, unfortunately, makes it everything but a light machine gun.

  5. Indeed. If you want a short recoil system to kick less you have to reduce the speed at which the barrel kicks the bolt. Which means adding mass to it....
