I don't think there's a currently active government who hasn't done that at least a few times...

You're a disciple of Gun Jesus. Collect, preserve and enjoy. But do not destroy. If you don't have the finances to restore/repair a gun properly then it's better to pass it off to another collector who does... but that doesn't prevent you from enjoying it the best you can while it's in your possession :P TL;DR: There's nothing wrong with you. You're just a gun nerd! :P

Except it was made at DWM. As Ian said. And showed the factory logo to support... So it's German made alright. It's just old and battered.

@JippaJ "Don't say nothing at all"..?... So someone should say something?

For Ian it is "all of the above.. and then some". Serious historians will dig out information wherever they can. Sometimes it's old factory archives that tells the story. This is rare for post-ware Germany because the SS were very efficient at destroying, well, everything written. Sometimes it's government procurement papers that become declassified. Sometimes it's simply from piecing together multiple specimen and comparing against known serial number ranges, etc, etc.

They were very very popular for about half a century. And since they're durable and well made they stuck around for a freaking long time even after that. Probably only Colt 1911 and M2 50BMG models have been made in more numbers and been in service for longer...

They're overly complicated by today's standard. And the nobody will accept having a flap of metal ruin your sight picture between every shot..
