It's the eternal argument of logistics vs perfection. Yes, a custom cartridge specifically designed for a PDW would be ideal, but on the other hand, the personel handed a PDW are the ones who are expected to only use it if the shit has hit the fan. So the logistics guys go "Ain't no way we are having one more item to keep track of".... Which is a little bit silly, as the people with PDWs are very very rarely going to need resupply. Odds are very good that the 3 mags they have will last until the conflict is over... or until they're in a body bag.

Stay strong brother, and LISTEN to those with combat experience. Don't try to prove yourself. A brave soldier full of holes is useless, but a cautious soldier without holes can fight again tomorrow.

Imagine this in 5.56 NATO, made mostly in polymer with steel inserts, with an integrated barrel shroud and a vented barrel system (like a Velrod) to take the worst of the concussion. With proper gas tuning that could be effective to 200m while not being (much) louder than a 9mm.
