@simoncleret You can just nix the "French" part of your statement and you'll have the situation in every country at several occasions in the past, present and future.

It always helps immensely when the interviewer is deeply knowledgable on the topic and also understands that an interviewer should facilitate rather than force the topic. There was never any doubt Ian was the former, but being his chill self it would turn out that the latter came naturally to him as well....

Given his recent fascination with Finnish firearms... I'm worried he might just casually start speaking fluent Finnish one day...

@victorarnaud304 Since the GIGN is a police(-ish) division and not a military division they were obviously under different budgets. And by the time the GIGN became the president's personal security you can probably guess how easy it must have been to let a remark slide in the right place at the right time.

There's a cut most times after Ian's questions in English. That's because there's a translator present. Ian's French is passable enough to ask for road directions, order food and talk about the weather (and obviously guns!), but for the finer points both of them are at a huge disadvantage since this is a deeply technical conversation and not just the run-of-the-mill "How do like the latest pop single?" type interview. Even though I'm fairly fluent in English (and probably speak it better than Ian speaks French) I would also prefer to answer in Danish if I was asked to elaborate on some of the finer points and deeper insights in my own field of expertise. I suspect any bilingual will give you the same answer...

Today it's almost certainly going to be an Accuracy International rifle of some description. If he would prefer .308 or .338 Lapua Magnum is another matter entirely. Probably .308 since the GIGN would absolutely rarely have to cover distances longer than, say, 500 meters, and the lighter construction seems to appeal to him.

Since you can write you can clearly also read....

This entire thread turned as French as it can be... why the hell do you guys start speaking French under an English comment when we all bloody fucking know you speak English perfectly well? You can't even use your accent as an excuse when typing! :P Also: I wanna know what you're saying!

@SolidSioux1987 Well then it has to be 7.5x54mm too... which makes it a non stater to mere mortals anyway :P

@ZATennisFan He is 77 years old now... and I still wouldn't fuck with him!

He's 77... what did you expect? That he would sound like Tom Jones in his prime?
