@otm646 The US navy sends the warning via radio or loud speaker. They send the disablement via firepower. This is because they're a military force. If you run into them you're an armed force of some description yourself. So you should intuitively understand the gravity of the situation. The Coast Guard sends three warnings. One via radio or loud speaker. A few shots in your general direction, and finally a well placed shot somewhere that clearly says "they could've fucking killed me if they wanted". This is because they're a law enforcement agency. If you run into them you're on the wrong side of the law somehow. However, you may not even realise this. And you are (unfortunately) legally allowed to be stupid. However you're also legally obliged to realize that when your coffee mug is shot to splinters it's time to react to what-the-hell-ever the guy on the other boat is yelling at you. I have zero problems with military forces being ill tempered death dispensers towards adversaries. That's kinda their stated purpose right from the get-go. The problem arises when either A) We try to use military forces as cheap/readily available law enforcement in combat zones, or B) Real law enforcement agencies forget that they're not in a bad action movie and thus act like a military force with a badge and blinking lights.

@timewave02012 Today, yes. In '73 when the best pistols had an absolutely atrocious trigger pull and feed reliability was still not 100%, no. You need to appreciate that 48 years ago even the 1911 or Browning Highpower couldn't routinely dump 100 rounds in rapid succession without at least one hickup. For a military force his idea would be dumb as fuck, but GIGN is not a military force. They're an anti-terror unit operating among civilians. They are, if worst come to worst, there to sacrifice themselves in exchange for a hostage. Today a Glock 17L with a hand fitted trigger and a precision barrel would do the job just fine. But '73 is certainly not today....

Normal SWAT teams: "You're coming with us dead or alive... but probably dead!" GIGN: "We'll turn you into Jesus rather than let you die! We said: YOU COMMIN' WITH US!" Mr Prouteau is an absolute legend, and it was a real pleasure to hear the fantastic tales behind both GIGN and the MR73. That confidence shot really puts things into perspective. As a former artillery man who addresses shells "To whom this may concern" that was a quite different take on things. I really like the "You're not certified to shoot in a hostage situation until you can shoot at your own buddy without sweating it"-philosophy....
