I had the pleasure of lugging around an original pattern G3 as a conscript back in '96. Germany sold a million of these used to Denmark for the whopping price of one dmark a pop... in '75. So lets just say that a lot of conscripts before me had used it (probably as a shovel at times). The thing just was that it only ever had one issue: if it was dirty you had to really mind your shoulder contact. If you had good contact it would shoot itself red hot no problem. Semi-sloppy contact and it would fail to reload... (And kick like mule - so you learned it quickly anyway!).... But other than that it was perfect. Battered as it looked with half the bluing worn through, it was a phenomenally accurate rifle. I would routinely shoot 198 out of 200 at 300m with iron sights. All day, every day. It was easy to clean and as long as you kept it slathered in oil (it has convenient external holes for an impromptu dollup) it kept going like a steam engine. I've taken out a good spoon full of sand upon cleaning more than once, at it did not care... as long as it was well lubed in teflon oil...
