I totally get why cosplayers want to make props that don't contain a real gun.... And don't contain mechanisms that a dumb TSA officer might mistake for a real gun. A lot of the hardcore cosplayers go to conventions all over the world. Gun laws and firearms culture differ wildly around the world. Especially the latter is not a trivial matter. There are lots of places where people categorically don't like the idea of live firearm being present in places that are automatically assumed to be "all civilian". Whether that is how things are in your own country or not is irrelevant when you visit another.
