Havel, with an H. And no, they wouldn't be.

With the exception of those who falsely believe they are enslaved. Paradoxical.

@jarenc2048 Your statement IS a vague generalization that can be interpreted multiple ways. That's just a fact. Whether you did that intentionally to pander to people is another question. In any case you lose the argument with that reply.

Hundreds of thousands of dead people can't be wrong!

@Barklord To be fair she died in 1975 before Thatcher or Reagan came to power and Keynes still held sway in economics.
3
@nomnomyam9379 Your nuanced argument is appreciated but the phrase "big pharma scam" kind gives the game away don't you think? I don't doubt that pharmaceutical companies would love to make money giving unnecessary booster shots till the end of time but the decision to impose mandates is being made by governments and businesses and the reasons are more complex than profits in just one sector of the economy.

@bc2578 critics of Israel are routinely called antisemitic but they don't respond by saying, fine, that just proves I'm intelligent (and by implication in the right). They respond by argument against the claim, usually by making a distinction between criticism of a state and of a people. Your idea that the opposite of this is the more rational approach is simply baffling.

@cjay2 more like the channel no longer has the audience it deserves.
3
@rosh3385 I think you can still have actual discussions here or at least examine other viewpoints to sharpen your own arguments, but you are right that not a lot of people are here to do that in good faith. And there are a lot of trolls here to prey on the paranoid.
3
@egrytznr8893 Plenty of lost souls here. It's hard not to be sympathetic on some level. What saddens me is when some comment from a person actually living under a Totalitarian system like Iran or Egypt gets buried beneath the brain drool of privileged people in rich societies, insisting on their oppression and imminent enslavement. 🤷♂️ I also remember when the only comments here were "thank you for this fine introduction to Heraclitus" and the like. At least we have our memories.
3
@DavidFlores-rg4xu there are quotes and statements here that are vague enough to have been pulled from the I Ching or a daily horoscope getting thousands of likes from so-called independent minds. It's a bit like that scene in Life of Brian where the huge crowd shouts "we're all individuals! We've got to think for ourselves!"
3
That depends a lot on how you interpret these examples from history in the world today, but there are plenty of human rights groups out there that you can volunteer with.

And up is down and freedom is slavery.
2
@Barklord Polyanyi and Henry George are both overlooked thinkers who offer a lot of insight into the environmental issues of this century, in my opinion. It would be nice if we could get past the endless rehash of 20th century issues and focus on the problems of the the 21st century. First step of the rehab is maybe quit comparing things you dislike to Nazi Germany or Stalinist purges.
2
@conradblack2504 every time there's a new conspiracy its adherents will crow about how Chomsky's lost all credibility now (as he destroys it), and then the opposite actually happens.
2
@conradblack2504 you're almost as dense as your namesake. But thanks for proving my point, I figured you to be a truther as well as antivax.
2
@conradblack2504 It's not an assumption on my part, it's an opinion based on what you've said about 9-11 and big pharma scams. Some conclusions are easily drawn. I will, however, apologize for comparing you to the real Conrad Black. Shouldn't wish that on anyone.
2
I think he did sense this happening to him and removed himself from the political sphere because of it. He could have remained in office much longer had he chosen to.
2
@bc2578 Solzhenitsyn was accused of it and perhaps with some justification. To say it of Havel is an absurdity.
2
@bc2578 Another dog whistle-style evasion. My thinking skills tell me not to waste any more time talking to you. Why not come out and say it plainly? You think the Jews deserved it and you view their persecution throughout history as proof of their guilt. How Ironic that you essentially agree with a perspective these videos are ment to oppose.
2
Salty Gammon Yet another who won't say what he obviously believes. Go ahead and lift that arm.
2
@bc2578 I guess you're speaking in code to fellow nazis? Because you are far from the topic of Havel and Solzhenitsyn.
2
Salty Gammon lift up that arm. It's a real credit to this channel that you're here. Let me repeat: the idea that persistent persecution of a group is somehow proof that they deserve that persecution is one of THE MOST REPULSIVE AND ODIOUS IDEAS TO HAVE INFECTED THE HUMAN BRAIN. It's comical that I should have to clarify this on a channel supposedly devoted to the human prospect.
2
Salty Gammon your "points" are straight out of Elders of Zion and don't deserve any reply at all. I don't get into intellectual argument with insects.
2
Salty Gammon You know and care as little about the truth as you do about the origins and consequences of your own hatreds. Auf wiedersehen.
2
I wish the video focused more on what he actually did such as Charter 77 and how he fought against the claims (from Kundara and others) that it was all futile.
2
@bungus87 Notes from Underground is a good short introduction before diving into BK. Basically he lost faith in 19th century rationality after his time in prison and turned to a personal kind of mystic Christianity. You can see traces of it in Russia today.
2
The obligatory quote!
2
It's a bit cowardly to talk about the big lie only in the historical context of State Authoritarianism. This is to ignore totally the way modern authoritarians like Berlusconi, Oban, etc use media control and attacks on dissenting journalists to consolidate their power. You have created another Rorschach test where the viewer can find any belief he chooses confirmed by selective historical examples.
2
@stellaqaustralia misuse of quantum theory is one of the great underreported crimes of our time.
2
There are videos on Jung and Joseph Campbell in this series. On the flip side the nazis were notoriously interested in the occult.
1
@sirmeowthelibrarycat Pretty sure Himmler counts as a Nazi. I did not specify any particular figure. The interest predates Hitler and continued after him, in Chile for example.
1
@scottcoletta The latest Alex Jones/Lyndon Larouche type scam to cash in on the new left? No thanks. To the original poster: my advice is stay away from any group with a big ideological platform if what you want is a sense of community. You'll probably get targeted by con artists.
1
And what countries are those? Russia is certainly free of NGO influence these days but doesn't seem less authoritarian for it.
1
@mihajlocurcic4639 Authoritarianism is the diet version of Totalitarianism, the so-called illiberal democracy where all the real power is concentrated in one party but the facade of dissent and opposition is maintained. I would say Hungary and Russia are good examples of this but the poster has not said which countries he thinks are becoming totalitarian. His argument, though, is one you typically hear from authoritarian governments.
1
@oneofthesedays582 "real truth seekers" such as yourself, no doubt. 🙄
1
@UCP5dTv75W5syyz2lS4pLYQg No one disputes lobbying or vested interests, it's when you use them to dismiss the science that you become the seriously ignorant one here. Every vaccine in history was dismissed as a money-making scam by medical professionals at one time. Every one. Yet you are happy to let groups like America's Frontline doctors scam you in the exact way you claim the science is fooling everyone else. Darwin raises his glass. 🍻
1
@bc2578 most people would describe it as an accusation rather than a simple description because of the obvious negative implications. Perhaps these are not obvious to you because you are not bothered by them.
1
@bc2578 No, it is accusing someone of falsehoods and stirring up hatreds. That was the case with Solzhenitsyn's last work. If you take that as a badge of honor rather than something to be refuted one can only assume you think antisemitism is a good thing. You should quit obfuscateing and say what you really think, if it wasn't obvious already.
1
Salty Gammon "kosher" 🙄
1
Salty Gammon It's almost like you've been kicked out of a million bars yet still think you speak the truth. 😄🍻
1
@roebbiej It's a punchline. Don't kid yourself.
1
It must be strange to be facing that danger from the inside for a change. Not much Polish history is like that!
1
@andrewbowen2837 What makes you think a balance will be struck? What do you imagine it would look like? It sounds like a sort of Birth of Tragedy balance between reason and emotions but maybe you're suggesting something different?
1
@andrewbowen2837 Thanks for that detailed and cogent reply. I wish I could share your belief that rationality and its opposite are equally matched throughout history, only changing in degree of influence. You seem to have read a bit of Hegal and maybe some Zoroaster as well. My own feeling is that rationality is always at a disadvantage, and maybe most so when it's assumed to be the dominant influence. I see hope in a better understanding of cognitive bias and awareness of how our minds actually work, and how this can sabatoge our efforts to be rational. This can only be effective if a belief in rationality remains the dominant model overall, strengthened by the knowledge of our limitations. So, fingers crossed. 🤞
1
@andrewbowen2837 I wouldn't trust any person, group or technology claiming to fix it. With luck we can create a culture where people are aware of its pernicious influence and it become the socially acceptable thing to guard against it rather than just let 'er rip or make deflections or whatever. The channel Pindex, narration by Stephen Fry, just put out a video that profiles some of the AI technology that is working on this and would check reasoning steps in an argument the way other tech checks facts or spelling. I'm very much of two minds about this but the concept is fascinating.
1
@jarenc2048 No one is policing you, I'm just analyzing your statement to see if it actually makes sense or if it's just an appeal to emotion. This is called critical thinking and I have no doubt it seems weird to you.
1
Or drowned out.
