Maybe it's the subjective vs. objective? If his condition left him unable to write, think or communicate beyond the mundane it's hard not to believe it was dehabilitating, even though he may have been enthralled by the state he was in.

From his autobiography you get the sense he was deeply repressed and he just made an imaginative effort to think "unthinkable " thoughts. Maybe this is why he always took exception when people said his ideas were creative and imaginative rather than scientific.
