As a person who served in Stasi he obviously was a GDR patriot and such jokes could have offended him personally, aswell as discredited him in eyes of his friends, as he did not react to them. Just that. Western propaganda makes everyone overdramatic when speaking of everyday peoples relations in eastern bloc. While west itself is as intolerant as GDR or USSR never were.

@alwexander996 there's a fact that one country legalized tortures, openly commits them, was caught doing so "with evidence" many times, and proclaims itself a citadel of freedom and human rights. Speaking of communists using tortures (though this of course could happen) it's quite enough to compare how those whom USA supports behave towards communists (execution might be the most humane method of dealing with them) and on the contrary compare how communists treated nazis for instance.

@JoaoOstroski420 well, you have your personal property which obviously applies to a toothbrush or a car. Unless you are some top rank buerocrat who would be provided a car that is owned by the state for the period of your service. the idea is you can't own means of production, thus earn by exploitation of others. p.s. i know you were kidding, of course.
