The farther we get from our success, the more we forget how we achieved it. Every great empire that has ever existed has faltered and ultimately failed and in each and every case, it was the result of internal rot, complacency and laziness. An outside force may have finished a few of them off, but the cancer always started within. I don't know if I've got those quotes exactly correct; probably not, or where they originated, but each is as true as gospel, as my mom would say.
