I have serious doubts it'll do you much good but at least it'll keep you out of harm's way. I forget exactly where it was or all the finer details but there was a small set of steps built once some years back someplace, near a beach, I think, because people had been complaining for years that they were needed. So finally, a group of people got together and built them themselves at a cost of only a couple hundred bucks. Well, the city wasn't having any of this. The same city of course, that had been dragging its feet for years and never got anything built immediately sprang into action to demand that these steps be taken out at once. I guess there must have been some level of shame because the city did eventually get around to building their own..... at a cost or over $10G!!

Sanctions are a complete and utter joke!! They're just to give the US and other countries some kind of excuse and cover to be able to say they're "doing something." They're ignored with impunity, everybody knows it and nobody cares. They don't work, never have worked and never will work. Unless you count driving poor and hungry people even further into the ground working.

They do nothing to stop the powerful except maybe throw a few roadblocks up which they quickly find ways around. Have sanctions stopped N Korea from building their nuclear program? NO! Did they stop Iran from building theirs? NO! Did they stop Saddam Hussien from making trouble? NO! All they ever did was give the west cover and make the lives of the people even more miserable than they were before. They accomplished NOTHING! It's long past time that the US and the west stopped trying to be the world's hall monitor and accepted the world as it is and quit meddling. Either that or man up and take these countries on face to face in a war.

It's still not enough. The portions of Putin's economy that he really needs can still function. Not well, but they can still function. These sanctions are shot full of all kinds of very convenient exemptions, omissions, loopholes and work-arounds. Until those are closed, we've not begun to get serious. And we'll see in a few months who will have had more staying power - Putin with no money or Europe with no gas, the world without 30% of its wheat and all kinds of other things. The public - read "electorate" - can get just as nasty here as they can there. Putin plays a long game - our empty suits can't see past the next polling cycle.

Contributing more is exactly what they should have been doing from day 1. It's THEIR neighborhood! They SHOULD be contributing more; a LOT more! And not just cash either. Weapons! A f*cking shitload of them! This is a war IN Europe, BY European countries and the combined GDP of Europe is bigger than that of the USA. Russia "could" do lots of things.... up to and including pulling their collective heads out of their *sses and seriously getting their act together on the battlefield. I realize the likelihood of that isn't high but nevertheless, anyone with 2 cents worth of military experience and/or knowledge understands that you do NOT anticipate and plan for best case scenarios, you do it for worst case ones. You DON'T sit around talking about all the things (you think) they can't do and making up excuses for why you don't need to act, you talk about.... and plan for... all the things they could do... and you fully expect them to do them! So while we're talking about things which "could" happen, here's something NATO "could" do... get THEIR collective heads out of THEIR *sses, quit f*cking around and penny-packeting the Ukrainians with dribs and drabs of this and that, now and again, start putting some SERIOUS firepower on the ground... numbering in the 1000s of units, not the dozens... in Ukraine along with 200-300K troops to man it, give Russia a PUBLIC ultimatum to leave Ukraine... ALL of it.... in 48 hours or face a full scale, broad spectrum attack by NATO. Yeah, I know.... about the same likelihood as Russia getting their act together.

The main lesson Taiwan needs to learn from the Ukraine war is that it can depend on the US and its allies to give it the same support it gave to Ukraine........ That would be 5-10% of what they need, 12-18 months after it's needed. So it had better arm itself to the f*cking teeth and get ready to fight!

NATO's biggest weakness is, and always has been, it's lack of will to engage. For all it's military and technological might and for all its financial resources, it is politically, societally and culturally, as weak as a kitten and no one is more keenly aware of this than the man whose entire adult life has been dedicated to studying the west, identifying its weaknesses and devising ways to exploit them.

They are on the verge of a full fledged financial meltdown, international corporations are finding other sources of cheap labor, their demographics are collapsing at an astronomical rate and their "wolf warrior diplomacy" is seriously rubbing people the wrong way. They have exactly zero friends in the world and the only "allies" they have are a few Asian and African basket cases they've either bullied or bought off. China gains nothing by tying itself to a failing, dying colossus like Russia except perhaps some momentary, superficial satisfaction for having stuck it to the west. The problem though, is that China desperately needs the west but the west doesn't need China at all.

The big guy has proven to be rather more resilient than most thought so maybe it's worth trying to work with him instead of against him. Besides, the American record of success at prying Latin American dictators out of their hidey holes is rather spotty at best and even when successful, it often just leads to more and different problems. And the last attempt with The Big Boss Man here (doesn't he look like the wrestler?) was a text book case in ham-fisted ineptitude for the ages.

The only ones who are surprised by the failures of the USSS are those who are utterly ignorant of their history. There has been enough testimony come out over the years and enough volumes written to convince anyone that this outfit isn't fit to guard a henhouse. Read the testimony of the ER doctors who first saw Kennedy in Dallas. Those alone are enough to scare the shit out of you and they're only for starters! Failure is what this outfit is known for. It's only by the sheer grace of God and copious amounts of pure BS luck that many times more tragedies have been avoided. I spoke to an agent in Vancouver many years back and he told me the biggest thing they've got going for them is reputation. Everybody thinks they're invincible so not many try to test them. But the truth is that like all branches of the military, the public service and other government departments, they've become so politicized and weighted down with ass kissing, paper shuffling, butt covering bureaucrats who don't know if their arses were punched or bored that they can neither recruit nor retain the quality people they need to function properly. They've got numbers, sure; that's easy but what they haven't got, like every other department in the government, is competence. And their voluminous scandals and failures are dutifully swept under the rug and covered up to protect the bosses who are loyal to the politicians. That's why you never hear about most of them. Because of luck and coverup. The first word in "Secret Service" is "Secret" and that's not by accident!

It's generally accepted that doing something is better than doing nothing. That's true most of the time..... Most of the time. Where it goes bad is when you do the wrong thing, the stupid thing or the rushed through, knee-jerk, ill thought out, reactionary thing. This is a war that's going to have to be fought militarily yes, but also diplomatically and financially. As much as the US may not want to, it's going to have to listen to and collaborate with, the local Mexican authorities and there's going to have to be some give as well as take. It's true that there is rampant corruption in the Mexican government but there are also very many who'd give anything to see this matter solved. If the US decides to go at this by purely military means, it's going to discover that these newly designated "foreign terrorists" are going to respond in much the same way as those which have been previously designated as such..... They will simply disappear, blend into the countryside and carry out retaliatory strikes at the times, in the places, and in the methods of their choosing..... And like before, the US will spend billions on the effort... and ultimately fail. As well, it's another lesson.... if anyone is willing to learn it.... about that whole business of letting things get way out of hand before endeavoring to address them.

@assertivekarma1909 I think he was aware enough. He just didn't care. He still bargained he could get done what he wanted to get done and it's not yet certain he can't. And as a lifetime KGB man, he's plenty aware of the weaknesses of the west. If he perceived strength, unity and resolve, he likely wouldn't have made the move.

A cross between Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders (at least the "advertised" versions of each before they both sold out and became standard grade "party" men at the worst possible moment) doesn't sound all that bad, actually. If you disregard the bleatings of the hardcore partisans, there's actually quite a bit of overlap between the two; at least insofar as the desires of those who'd be inclined to vote for them. They're both populists of a sort (or at least, talked like populists) and there was actually a considerable number of their supporters who had the other one as their 2nd choice. Imagine that! In many ways, they (or at least their supporters) both wanted to get to much the same place. It was only a matter of some disagreement about how to get there. Don't know much about this NZ woman except that the mainstream press all act like teenagers at a Justin Bieber autograph signing whenever she is even mentioned (which is NEVER a good situation!) but one thing is clear from the results of both the NZ and USA elections....... the voting public is actually quite patient and forgiving as long as they think you at least give a fuck about them! They know you'll never be perfect and you don't have to be. Hell, you don't even have to be competent;... look at Cuomo, FFS!! But you do have to at least appear to take people's concerns seriously and not come off like the voters are your enemy! Talk and act like you give a fuck and you'd be surprised how many will support you! Wow; what a concept!!
