"Will common sense ever return to that party?" Well, to begin with, there was never all that much of it at the best of times but broadly, the answer to the question is no. And the reason is that the ratio of crazies to sensible is now so out of whack, and continuing to grow, that it can never right itself. For something to grow, it must first have some form of fertile ground to grow in and the party has made all these forms of insanity such an integral part of their identity now that they couldn't undo it if they wanted to. So many of the "old guard"; those who we might once have called the sensible ones, have retired, died or otherwise moved on, and the ones left have basically surrendered to the crazies and thrown in their lot with them. A guy like Carville or even Clinton couldn't even get a hearing today.
