  1. As bad as the current situation is, we should expect it to get many, many orders of magnitude worse in the years ahead. As shaky as Russia is/was, it's more or less the glue that's been holding the former Soviet space together in some sort of functioning reality from security guarantees, to trade to energy to keeping ethnic minorities in check. Take that away and you have the makings of several decades of general upheaval and chaos. Combine that with the coming collapse of China, and all of the drama that will accompany it, a likely significant re-alignment of the Middle East, the slow, steady decline of Europe and the fracturing of America and the outlook into the middle and late 21st century is pretty bleak.
