Also the commies usurped, first in important functions, then totally, the government that the locals established post liberation from Japan colonization, while the government that liberated Vietnam from France is what the Americans were fighting. A better comparison would be the Philippines war which also isn't remembered fondly.

I disagree in both cases, in that while in both cases the Americans tore down a weak independence movement weak to commie infiltration, in the case of Vietnam some actual diplomacy could have solved that, the "commies" were also far more freedom fighters while the general leftists and specifically socialists were different in Korea. In other words, the commies were the government that liberated Vietnam and were getting support from other commies and had support in the South as well, while the Korean government that liberated Korea wasn't who they were fighting with but people that colluded with the Soviets. A better comparison would be the Philippines war which also isn't remembered fondly.
