  1. Have you tried to provide an evolutionary argument as to why people are like that? Because I would argue that it is a defense mechanism. What you know is "safe" you have so far survived doing it but the person bringing an argument to you to change might be wrong or be unable to replicate the same thing with you or not have a full understanding of the complexities of what they are trying to get you to change towards or a number of other things that would end up with that change not going well vs you continuing on your "safe" route.
