Peterson specifically said separation of church and state not secularism and yes, the Church and state were always separate throughout both the Orthodox and Catholic worlds to different extents. This isn't secularism as it is currently understood but it is a strong separation of church powers and king powers. So even under divine right of kings, the king powers and church powers remained separate. Secularism as it is currently understood is a way to deal with the wars following the protestant reformation. 12:33 It is a pretty common argument that Christianity with its saints and trinity isn't actually monotheistic.
