We use metric measures as the base for the system, but we're not likely to go fully metric any time soon for the same reason that metric time never caught on. The US had a relatively simple system of measures at that point and was actively enforcing those measures. That may not seem like a big thing, but it's a much harder argument to make if you're a large enough country to manufacture your own things and have a system of measure that most people know. Most of the countries that ultimately went metric either didn't have an enforced and monitored system of measure or were too small to be able to manufacture most of their own things. On top of that, Europe got a chance to largely start over as the result of 2 world wars destroying much of their infrastructure throughout the continent,. But, most of the things people claim to be advantages of the SI units are lies. They're not less arbitrary than the Imperial measures, they're not more convenient at things that people would normally be doing and they'll be incredibly annoying to work with when you're on other planets or in space since most of the measures were defined based on scenarios you see on Earth.

You can tell that the metric system is inferior because people need to freak out whenever you point out how arbitrary it is.
