I think Hitchens is clearly onto something even though it's for the wrong reason. Women are less funny in large part because they're less likely to put themselves out there by standing out, less likely to develop the skill and they have less need of it. Humor is for many things, but it's particularly important if you're trying to avoid a fight and in getting women to go out with you. But, the bottom line here is that women who choose to make jokes about things that men actually get, are probably going to have no shortage of men laughing along. And you're absolutely right about good lucking people privilege. Men that are interested in women will tend to laugh at their unfunny jokes for the same reason that women who are interested in men will find everything hilarious. It's not necessarily because the jokes are funny, but rather a way of trying to get the other sex in bed.
