I don't see anybody beating down my door trying to make up for wrongs committed against me during my lifetime, let alone decades of anti-German bigotry that started during WWI and continue to the current day. I felt like crap about myself for much of my childhood because of the anti-German bigotry that was and still is being taught in the K-12 system. Or how about the black community paying reparations for their homophobia and super-majority support for California's Prop 8? Biden was right to refuse to accept responsibility for what previous generations did. The argument that we're responsible for what happened previously is literally Nazi rhetoric. It's blood debt and it's everybody as offensive now as it was when the Nazis were using it as part of their propaganda effort.

What's more, white people remain the most likely people to be killed by police and nobody seems to think there's an epidemic of lynchings of white people by police. They don't think it, because it's a stupid idea. Likewise, police aren't lynching people of color and the facts tend to back that view.

  6. The cops violated that student's first amendment rights. This is a public college and the college cannot prevent students from exercising their first amendment rights. What's more, it's ridiculous for the college to let Mnuchin rescind his permission to publish the video after the fact. The time for that would have been before the talk, not after. He gave permission and the college was under no legal obligation to honor an after the fact change of heart.

The whole thing is highly choreographed and you're not allowed to go anywhere without the permission of the government. I knew somebody who went to NK a couple times and every time you go it's the dear leader's birthday. Even if you come back a couple months later, he has another birthday. Iran also requires you to go around with a minder, but from what I understand, it's much less choreographed than North Korea where literally everything you see or do is fake.

He's absolutely right about the fact that there's a difference between sexual harassment and the various types of sexual assault. I didn't have a choice the first time I was kissed by a girl, but it's incredibly disrespectful to suggest that the times I've been catcalled were the same thing as that or that being forceably kissed is the same thing as being raped. If you can't comprehend the difference, then you madam are the problem. And BTW, I'm a guy, women and girls can be every bit as pervy and abusive as men are, it's just that we haven't as a society really recognized that women are just as responsible for this as men are. We punish men, but for the most part don't punish women that engage in these sorts of acts and acting like this is a gendered issue just muddies the water.

If getting rolexes, loans of fancy cars and large credit card debts paid for you isn't bribery, then I'm not sure how anything that the Clinton Foundation did could be considered bribery. I'm leaning more and more towards voting Trump as a big screw you to the Democratic establishment. They keep sending bad candidates for nomination and I don't think anything short of President Trump is going to convince them to start nominating decent politicians.

  17. That's something that people whose IQ wasn't as high as they wanted say. The truth is that for what IQ is intended to measure, it does a fine job of it. The problem comes when you try to use it for things other than predicting success in school. A person's IQ is going to fluctuate on a daily basis depending upon how their brain is doing on that day. If you get a bad night sleep, you're not going to do as well as if you had been sleeping well. IQ itself does get over stated, I tend to believe that a moderately high IQ is more useful than one that's actually genius caliber, but bad mouthing IQ doesn't impress anybody.

  18. The guns were out because he wasn't cooperating. Most felony arrests are made at traffic stops and the cops genuinely don't know if a driver or passenger has a weapon. This is why it's so important to move slowly and let the cops know if you need to reach into a bag. They don't know if you're in the process of committing a felony or have any arrest warrants until well into the interaction. I used to deal with a lot of law enforcement agencies when I worked security and most of the time, they want to get in and out as quickly and without drama as possible. Answering the questions as succinctly add possible and doing what they ask greatly reduced the chances of having problems. His lack of cooperation doesn't excuse the excessive force, but it likely nudged the confrontation in that direction.

The resisting orders obviously doesn't justify the killing, but it definitely contributed. Characterizing it as an execution isn't helpful. Not is implying that guilt had anything to do with it. It seems that Gene himself had no issues with gays, but was concerned with the fact that there ratings were down enough that they had to worry about being canceled. The problem is when you're indoctrinating children to eat something that's not healthy. In this case, there were enough women with similar stories that there was a certain amount of safety in making the accusation. But, justice isn't based on safety, it's based upon the law, the evidence and as much as possible not the people involved.   27. The grocery store I work for is providing all those things. Granted, the hazard pay arguably ought to be more, but they've got masks for us and gloves. Anybody that tests positive gets 2 weeks of paid leave. The specific pay varies a bit depending upon the position, but that includes new hires.   31. America used to have a rape culture. Up until the '70s there were still states where you could force your spouse to have sex and be immune to prosecution. That was a rape culture. Since that time our values have evolved as have our ability to investigate and prosecute rapes. The rates are dropping and continue to drop as a larger percentage of rapists are caught, some of them years later based upon DNA evidence that couldn't be tested at the time. Referring to American culture as a "rape culture" does a real disservice to people that have actually been raped. It also perpetuates the notion that there's nothing that individuals can do to reduce their risk. Had she chosen to limit her alcohol consumption to a reasonable level, it's far less likely that she would have been raped. I know that feminists hate that idea, but she's no less raped because he was responsible.

  42. Citation needed. Rape is more punished now than it was in the past and the rates for rape and sexual assault are falling as better methods are available to investigate and prosecute offenders. The cases that don't get prosecuted are mostly the result of the crime not being reported in the first place or there being insufficient evidence to warrant a conviction. Whether or not you like it, rapists still have their rights under the constitution. That being said, the lion's share of the alleged rapes that don't get reported don't get reported because they didn't happen. They include cases where the "victim" purposefully got a bit tipsy in order to be comfortable getting the sex that he or she wanted. Cases where the "victim" was still well in control of his or her consent, but is considered to not have consented because alcohol apparently wipes out a person's ability to consent to sex. Specifically sex, that excuse doesn't apply to any other stupid things a person might do. Driving drunk doesn't get a similar waiver of accountability. And it pretty much only gets prosecuted for men that have sex with drunk women, not the other way around. That being said, cases like this are a huge problem. As are the people who discourage victims from reporting the crime because it's allegedly not taken seriously.

  54. I'd settle for hazard pay. I've been working in public through the pandemic and I only got basically minimum wage and that $1200 everybody else got. Meanwhile last week, I got to deal with a verbally abusive person trying to get a price check over the phone and chewing me out about how good I have it while he's been out of work. Dude was making more than I have been through the pandemic and was more interested in abusing me than in working with me while I bent the rules to help the guy out. Or that the standards being used were significantly lower than the typical guilty beyond the shadow of a reasonable doubt? These cases of alleged rape and sexual assault are criminal acts that should be handled by the police and the prosecutor's office. The reason for handling it internally was to try and do an end run around due process as the colleges weren't required to meet the same standards as the worst case scenario would be kicking them out of school rather than sending them to prison. The end result was a set of regulations that protected the accuser at the expense of the accused in direct conflict with the normal way things are done in the US where the accused are innocent until proven guilty. The worst is that there's no evidence to support the idea that there is a problem that is so significant that it should justify throwing out the constitution. The studies that allege that this is a problem were conducted with extremely questionable methodologies and do not represent colleges in general.

In many parts of the country, there are essential workers that are making less than that $600 a week stimulus check, on top of having to actually work and take on the additional risk so that everybody else can stay at home. Pelosi isn't a great Speaker, she hasn't been able to deliver on the priorities that the Democrats claim to support and even when they did have both houses and the White House they still didn't get anything done. And under her leadership, the Democrats lost over a thousand seats across the country in the more important state races. She's a massive fundraising opportunity for Republicans as even most of the Democratic voters hate her guts. More recently, she got rolled on the Cares Act, a great Speaker would have kept it held up in the House with procedural issues until they were able to get more out of it. Unlimited PPP money for small businesses that qualified through the end of the pandemic. Hazard pay for essential workers, not giving $5tn to the largest corporations without accountability. All of those could been included in the Cares Act had she decided to actually do her freaking job as Speaker. The GOP desperately wanted that money for the donors, and her failure to substantively deal with any of that is on her.

For close to 240 years that's how it's worked. The President would nominate somebody for the Supreme Court and the Senate would examine their record and credentials and give it an up or down vote. In no instance ever, has the Senate refused to do that much so they could steal the nomination for their party. At this point the process is so fouled up that the next nominee will likely have to face an extensive background investigation as nobody is going to believe it. The other detail here is that he might well have been the only pick they have that's acceptable to Trump. He's somebody that believes that you can't subpoena a sitting President and is a huge supporter of executive privilege which is something that Trump desperately needs as much of what he' wants to do is blatantly unconstitutional. Rape and sexual assault crimes in general are hard to count because most of them occur between people who know each other. Which makes it very, very hard to determine the difference between actual rape and sex where there wasn't an explicit agreement to have sex. The two are very different morally and ethically. As far as it being incredibly rare, I had a hard time finding the conviction rate in the US for proceedings that end in trials, but in the UK, it's less than 2/3 of trials for sexual assault wind up with a conviction, meaning that some portion of those 37% that resulted in aquitals were false allegations, we don't really know how many, but legally speaking, the crimes aren't considered to happen. In the US, the numbers are hard to find, but it's a similar problem, these are cases where there might have been a rape, usually the parties have some relationship with each other, but there isn't any evidence to assume that the crime happened beyond the evidence to assume that it didn't happen and it shouldn't be claimed that those incidents aren't false allegations as it's equally valid to suggest that they are. But, doing that would lead to a number that's several orders of magnitude higher. So there's pressure to not admit the truth on that.

Even sex crimes being prosecuted in a timely fashion it can be hard to establish whether or not the incident happened and then what actually did happen. Personally, I think it makes a ton of sense that people would downplay the effects. People tend to over-dramatize the abuse when there are degrees of abuse. There's a very real difference between an unwanted peck on the cheek, being penatrated and just gawked at while undressed and each person is going to have their own feelings depending upon their point of view and their maturity at the time. If we want these people to come forward and name names, then there needs to be some protection provided against the effects of doing so. Even if the prosecution is successful, the victims name is likely mud and that doesn't even consider the real possibility that the accused will be acquitted. Lastly, there's the issue of what you personally feel about what happened to yourself. A lot of that probably is denial or a lack of awareness that you get to consent to whatever physical contact people have with you.

The regular pasteurized stuff goes off pretty quickly both in terms of going sour and in terms of bacterial growth. Pasteurized milk can start to go a bit off just on the way home without refrigeration. Leaving it out is banned by the health code for a reason, not because it allows petty bureaucrats to issue citations and write restaurants up. Killing all the bacteria in food without destroying the nutrition or taste is extremely difficult which is why milk is rarely shelf stable without need for refrigeration.

What it demonstrates is that being caught breaking the law, disrespecting the police officer and then running away or fighting ends badly. This is something that I was taught as a child. Videos surfacing where black people are just randomly pulled out of their car and beaten for no reason are few and far between because it's a rare happening. Cases where black people are pulled out of their car and arrested for being surly and refusing to obey lawful orders are much more common because it's much more common. Something does need to be done, but blaming the police for things that happen after the suspect has forced their hand is questionable. Yes, the beating was more than what probably should have happened, but it misses the point that there would have been no violent arrest had he just taken the ticket option that he was offered.

Around here, WA state, you can get the first two years paid for through running start. The next two, you can finish part time while working. Other states don't have that program, but you can do the entire degree part time while you work. Nobody is being put into a position where they have to take out massive loans to get a degree and it's not helpful to continue the lies about students being forced to. If you spread the spending out, you also get more tax credits to pay for a portion of it. And when you do finally graduate, you'll have work experience to make the transition to a career easier.

If you think that animal products are bad, just look at what soy and improperly prepared grains do to the body. In short, the "benefits" that people generally tout in the vegan diet usually aren't. Cutting your cholesterol and fat intake has some pretty serious health consequences as cholesterol is what gives your cells their soft rubbery consistency and prevents them from freezing and the best sources of vitamins A, D, E and K are mostly from animals. In some cases, like flax seed oil, the form of nutrients found aren't even usable to humans. But, the forms found in animal based oils are much more easily absorbed. At the end of the day, humans have teeth like we do because we're supposed to be eating meat. Our digestive system isn't anywhere near long enough to be living a purely plant based dietary lifestyle and anybody who chooses to disrespect their body by cutting out the meat and animal products completely is going to cut a few years off their lives in the process. The best dietary advice remains to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and meat and animal products in moderation. Stray too far from that and you'll get sick.

I'm not aware of any species of animal that is born vegetarian. At any rate it's not common. Even cows consume animal products during their early weeks before going vegan. A child will literally starve to death on vegan diet during those first few months because mother's milk is designed to be the most efficient method of getting nutrition into the baby. Older children are a bit less of a problem, but a toddler has a very small stomach. Hence why they get done eating so quickly and are hungry again so soon. Their stomachs are proportionally smaller than an adults. Not to mention that during those first few years children grow more than they will at any point. I mean they'll pretty much double in size and then double again before they're 18. A vegan diet is just not suitable for children without major modifications. Basically if you throw a rock at somebody's head, you should be responsible for the normal consequences of that, if they have a weaker than normal skull and are more seriously injured you shouldn't be accountable for the extra harm caused, just the reasonably expected harm. So in this case, if he had been taking drugs or had some other ailment that made him more susceptible to death or serious injury than normal, that should be taken into account. In this case, I doubt it would change anything, but an attorney would be negligent for not trying pretty much everything possible, except for issues that are being saved for appeal.

The difference is that because New Zealand's medical system is set up to be more cost effective, the coverage covers more of the cost of the emergency room visit than if you didn't have coverage at all. But, if you didn't have coverage, I doubt very much that the cost of visiting an ER would be much lower than it is in the US. It's just very expensive to keep the personnel and testing equipment available on that basis.

The ultimate result is the feelings of loneliness, isolation and damage that we should be trying to avoid encouraging. Sexual abuse is wrong, because forcing sexual intimacy on other people is wrong, not because of the actual effects. The effects are at most helpful in determining the punishment.

If you do it wrong you spread bacteria from pocket to pocket and sweep food particles into the pockets between the teeth. Much of what dentists do isn't in the best interests of the patience. Those "amalgam" fillings that they put in for decades are mostly mercury and were known to be toxic from the time they were invented. And the advice on brushing and flossing has nothing to do with oral hygiene. If you care about your teeth, cut down on the sugary junk food and learn to bass brush. Make sure you're gettig sufficient magnesium, calcium and vitamin D. Chances are that's all you need and it's far less likely to destroy your gums than flossing is. You can be pretty sure that your relatives that are dental hygienists have no idea who is and isn't flossing. Dentists are surgeons and they recommend surgical procedures even though less invasive methods would work better. Fix the diet and properly brush the gums and you shouldn't have any gum disease or tooth decay to worry about. Bacteria are only a problem if you've already got weakened teeth and gums.

They've had well over a century to get it right and they still don't have any evidence to back the assertion. People who floss appear to have better gums primarily due to survivorship bias.   346. That's not even remotely true. Dr. Bass the first president of the ADA didn't floss. Flossing wasn't even a thing at the time. He had severe gum disease at one point and had to literally invent a solution to the problem. His solution was what's now referred to as Bass brushing. There's videos and it remains an ADA approved method of brushing, it's just not widely disseminated because it works. Basically, you're working a soft brushed toothbrush in between the teeth and sweeping the food particles and bacteria away from the gum line. You irritate the gums less and you get the material away from all of the gums, not just the part between the teeth. All flossing does is irritate the gums, spread germs from pocket to pocket and enrich the dentist that's giving out self-serving advice that doesn't work. My mother figured out decades ago that a dentist can't tell if you've been flossing through the entire 6 months between appointments, at best they can tell the last couple weeks. If you want to keep your teeth, stop flossing, start brushing properly and cut out the sugary and carbohydrate laden junk food that feeds the bacteria in the first place.

Breast milk is literally the only thing that babies should be eating if possible. Formula is acceptable if she can't provide it in adequate amounts.

If you've got tons of lower courts making bad decisions that SCOTUS can pretend they don't have time for, you get a similar effect to if SCOTUS itself was ruling on those issues. It doesn't set precedence the same way, but it could be a generation before we get to start fixing the court. In the long term, we need a nonpartisan group to decide whom to allow on the list which the President is allowed to choose from. The rest of the process would remain the same, but it would reduce the number of fully unqualified judges to be on the court. Thomas and Scalia are/were particularly unqualified to be on the court. People like to claim that Thomas didn't get a job right out of law school because of his race, but that ignores the fact that he is completely unqualified to be an attorney, his legal theories have no basis in law or reality.

There's practical reasons why we don't usually require defendants to cover themselves up, it isn't necessarily possible to cover all things like that up. But, in this case, the tattoos are not relevant to the question of whether or not the defendant is guilty and as such they should be covered during the phase where the trial is determining guilt. If he's convicted and they start considering the penalties involved with the conviction, that's the time where seeing the tattoos might be relevant. The unfortunate truth here is that our reaction to tattoos like that happens at a very low level and it's not easily ignored. The defendant has a right to a jury trial and as a society we aren't well served sending people who aren't guilty to prison. If he's guilty and convicted and we cover up the tattoos then we can be reasonably certain that justice was done. If the tattoos aren't covered up, then we'll never really know how much of an impact they had. I've been a juror and no matter how hard you try to keep that sort of stuff out of your mind, it's going to color how you weigh the evidence to some extent. Especially if it's something like Neo-Nazi tattoos.

That's not the police's fault. The police officers made the best call they could with the available information. It could just as easily have been a private citizen with a concealed firearm permit or somebody carrying a weapon illegally. Put blame where it's due. On the person that was behaving in a reckless and irresponsible manner. It's unfortunate that it came to that, but he didn't exactly give them any choice.

Justice for this involves the courts and a jury of the accused's peers.

In a situation like that, there's no hope of getting the truth, there's no guarantee that there even is a victim as often times both parties were drunk at the time and neither party was in any better position to consent than the other. Or, there's just no witness available, so there's no way of knowing whether or not there even was a crime committed. The only reasonable way of handling it is to make sure the cops find out and do their investigation. Perhaps find some way of separating them when possible, but that's it.

Plus there's been a massive amount of investment made in making cars safer and the number of fatalities on the road has been going down for decades. Secondly, whether or not cars have mufflers has little impact on fatality rates. Cars that are silent are more dangerous than ones that make noise to the point where when we move to all-electric vehicles they're going to have some sort of sound makers in order to give people that warning that they're coming. But, more importantly, we need cars, without them our economy would grind to a halt. We don't particularly need guns and there are literally tens of thousands of people who are killed by firearms that would either not be dead or would have to put some effort into killing themselves.

You see the same problems plaguing white people in certain parts of the country because they don't have the resources or knowledge to work their way out of their holes, but nobody blames racism for that.

  489. @mxlbabe They were substantially poorer because at the time even with training a Black attorney could only have Black clients due to racist policies of the day. The best he or she could hope to be is an attorney for others in the community. That's no longer the case, there are successful attorneys of all cultural backgrounds and they have clients of all cultural backgrounds. Most people are more concerned with the fact that the attorney will provide the legal service they need rather than their skin color. If the Black community would support Black businesses and pool the resources they have, that would change. There's plenty of money in the Black community to change things. They've certainly got more money than the LGBTQ community had at the start of our civil rights movement.

  490.  @BobbyMarley718  This is liberal BS though, not everybody commits crimes and at the point where you're caught, it's lame to suggest that you should be allowed to get away with it due to your skin color. Yes, there are disproportionately stiff penalties for people of color, but that ignores the fact that you're likelihood of being arrested and successfully prosecuted decreases significantly if you don't commit the crime and don't hang out with criminals in the first place.

It's also not an excuse for why the Black community generally doesn't support their own being successful. The community is doing a lot to keep itself down. If you don't believe me, just look at the Africans that have immigrated to the US in the last several decades. Mysteriously, a lot of this "racism" doesn't seem to be holding them back from achieving things academically and in the work force.

Or are you seriously suggesting that Africans that have immigrated here over the last 30 years are dealing with less racism than those that descended from slaves? TYT are right in that it's not an individual pull yourself up by the bootstraps kind of a deal. Groups that work their way out of that have to actually work together. And they don't do things like having tons of children out of some sort of a committed relationship. Racism is an excuse. The Irish and Italians also had to deal with significant levels of racism, but they were able to build up their respective communities enough to not be stuck in it all these decades later.

She chose not to extend her registration on time the way that she's legally required to and now she's going to suffer the consequences. I've lived overseas and I wouldn't whine about the authorities deporting me if I ignored their requirements.

  503. Yes, but essential workers got our money slashed from $25k to zero, even though we're doing extra work, taking on extra risk and the unemployed got $9.6k that we didn't. For much of the pandemic I was making less than those on unemployed.

Just like last time, they screwed Bernie out of his chance and enough people failed to turn up in the right states to tip things to Trump. It's going to be the same thing again. Putting up Biden neutralizes all that as Biden also lies about his record and is even worse off in terms of cognitive faculties than Trump. Barring giving it to Clinton again, there's few candidates that are weaker than Biden.

  509. When they do things like goose the economy with massive tax cuts, anybody that owns stock is likely to benefit. Same goes for most pro-business policies. They may not know what specific stocks they own, but they know that they're going to personally benefit in aggregate.
